What small/mini may I add in this bed?

In this topic I've shown the new bed that I made for small and mini hostas. There is still space left for at 2-3 small or minis. Could you, please, recommend me some more varieties that I'm missing in my mini collection?

Ok, so here is a bit of reality for those of you who responded about using my Social Security for the "extra" income I need. I "qualify" for full SS since I am 65, but they have denied my benefits because of ----my income. That's right. You see, if you work all your life, put yourself through undergrad all on your own for 15 years, then go to grad school for 6 years while adopting a baby at age 37, followed by working for a few incompetent and/or unethical bosses, move on to starting your own agency, and eventually becoming a little bit successful at what you do -- you are PENALIZED for it when you NEED some of that money back you've paid to SS all those years. Yes, I "make" a good income, but what I actually take home to pay my bills is not always enough, despite living a pretty frugal life. Therefore, like I said when I posted this question, I will always have to work, and am simply looking for the simplest/best/easiest way to stay in my own home by turning some of the space into income. I feel like I deserve this. I am leaning toward buying a free standing kitchenette (by Acme or Summit, which are very popular in NYC/Hong Kong where space is a real premium). This would require simply putting a lock on a common door, adding some minor electrical and plumbing, and living in half of my home while renting the other half to a medical/grad student. Are there foreseeable problems? Perhaps! But moving out of my home is not an option. And this could pay for half of my mortgage, making that payment below what I would have to pay for a smaller rental house in an undesirable neighborhood if I did move. Not exactly feeling the love from some of you posters, but to those of you who offered encouragement, I thank you.

Thanks Su! I will let you know how the streps do. AND I am really antsy to start some of my mini trailers and micro mini leaves! There are some that could be started. But first I want to make sure I have the right stuff for them. I am thinking a little raspberry container cause it has a lid. The lid and the bottom have slashes in them for great ventilation. Oh I have never had a micro mini and the smaller something is the more it fascinates me!!! Rosie

homepro01, I don't understand your comment about duct work for AC. I have forced air heating. I replaced the furnace (which is in the attic), ducts, and registers this year. I don't know what other duct work would be required for adding AC. I was told I would need to add a line for the refrigerant. The problem is where to place the outside unit. I'm in a townhouse. On the ground floor, the unit would be too close to neighbor's house to meet code. Alternative is to put the unit on the 2nd floor deck (hire a crane to put it there). The unit would be just outside my bedroom - I don't know if the noise would bother me. I'll look at the cirrus hugger fan. I have a Minka pancake fan in the living room and I don't think it cools the air as much as the Minka Artemis.

Covering new garden beds with tarp for spring, should I add manure?

Rather than a tarp why not use newspaper or cardboard over the manure them with other organic matter? I understand that the newspaper or cardboard would be more labor intensive (maybe) than a tarp but they can stay in place and add more organic matter to the soil. kimmq is kimmsr

How about 'Lemon Frost', 'Twist of Lime', 'Kifukurin Ko Mame', 'Dixie Chick' and I cannot believe you don't have 'Blue Mouse Ears'....

Gesila, these are very cute plants. I like your Limey Lisa the most. Does it have a good substance? Cherry Tart looks great too. I wonder how different it is from Little Red Rooster.

Yea, I guess I should have a look at minis with narrow leaves like Hacksaw or Kifukurin Ko Mame. I just have overall impression that they have average substance sort of Stiletto. And I prefer hostas with better than average substance.

Pieter, of course, I have Blue Mouse Ears, 2 of them. Can't understand how did I manage to skip them in my list.
Isn't Dixie Chick similar to Lakeside Zinger?

I just ran out and checked my little ones. Limey Lisa's substance is slighly heavier than Teaspoon but not as good as the Mouse Ears.

I forgot to add Golden Tea Cup. This one is heavily corrugated and cupped, the leaves on this one have really good substance. This one nears the top of my list, but mine's not ready for picture yet.

How about Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Mine was a small TC liner and it's grown quite well neglected in a pot in the back of the garden. It's not picture worthy yet either.

If you like the Tiaras, I love these two:

Grand Prize, again this one has been neglected in a pot all summer.

Emerald Tiara is my one of favorite too.

Don't know how close 'Dixie Chick' is to 'LS Zinger' seeing as I only have DC, the pictures in the HL show the LS variety to have slightly wider margins, but that could well be a maturity issue. Certainly Danny's picture shows a much wider margin than I have seen on my DC here.

Another one to consider is 'Moonstruck', or 'Goober' perhaps, maybe 'Ice Cream' or 'Tick Tock', the latter has impressed me this year, it's almost like a mini 'June'. And it's remarkably sun-tolerant for a green/blue variegated cultivar.

Pieter, that what I thought when I looked at pictures of DC and LS Zinger in the Internet, that they are similar. 'Tick Tock' is already planted in this bed ;). It good to know that it's doing so well for you and that it looks like 'June' which I like a lot. And I already have 'Moonstruck', it's growing very nicely in the other small/mini bed.

Gesila, I will look up 'Golden Tea Cup', it sounds very much in my taste from your description. 'Grand Prize' was on my original shopping list from Hosta World but I decided to keep this order to just 10 varieties and have chosen 'Tropical Storm' instead. So may be next year I'll get my hands on it.

Maybe also consider Dragon Tails, Peppermint Ice, Raspberry Sundae, Tiny Bubbles, or Yellow Boa.

I saw an X-Rated at the arboretum. After an extremely hot, dry summer, it looked great. I didn't like those odd shaped hosta from their photos, but decided I like them after seeing them in real life.

It's time to eat crow: I DO have both 'Dixie Chick' and 'Lakeside Zinger', and here they are, side-by-side. While they are similar, they are distinct, with LS having much more pronounced veining versus the much smoother and glossy appearance of the DC leaves.

I love that forum! It's so great that people here are so eager to help each other. Thank you all! Now I have trouble to decide what to choose, since I need just 2 minis for that bed or I'll have to build a whole new one to fit all other suggestions.

Pieter, thanks a lot for this side by side comparison. I have to decide whether I should buy 'Dixie Chick' to pair it with my 'Dixie Chickadee' or not.

It looks like I should better go to US and bring all those hostas from there since not everything is available here in Europe.

First i would like to say that i love gardening. The plants here are new for me; means i am not familiar with those species. But the positive and best thing for me to join this forum is to get great information of number of plant species of world. Gardening is not just a hobby; one can make a career in this fields as agriculture officer or some other.

I cannot believe that I'm still able to add one of my favorites. It is Masquerade. It is white or cream centered, and I fell in love with it when I saw the clumps in someone's border, almost stealing the show from the big dudes.
Mine is only a baby, but I have hopes it will get to be a full clump.

Another one which I like is a small, not a mini. It is like a green Afro hairdo, it is The Razor's Edge. I really like it. If you don't have one, it is quite vigorous and the one I got in about March is quite full and about a foot across, about a foot tall at the most.

ymADDOX, I am pleased to have two Curly Fries which are gold as can be and extremely stiff in the same pot. They sort of look like an order of MacD's fries with ruffle cuts!

Since you seem to like Lakesides, here is another one I have in a trough presently, but it might need to be moved out on its own before it overwhelms the others.

i just ordered these mini's, the ones i listed and are waiting on their arrival...the curly fry was a mothers day gift from the owner so it will be very special. I am just like that, if someone thinks enough of me to be that kind i think enough of them to cherish what they give me...and you could not give me something i love more than a plant :)

these will be my first mini's and i am pretty excited about them...thanks for the pics, i love them :)
