Wild Blue Lupine (Lupinus Perennis)

I just received an order of seeds for Lupine which I was planning on direct sowing over the winter, but the seed pack says not to sow in garden soil. The instructions for sowing indoors are vague and to be honest, I have never had much luck with growing things from seed. I would really like to succeed with these as no one seems to sell these plants at garden centers.

Has anyone ever grown it? If so, do you have any recommendations on how to grow it indoors, when I should sow? I know the seeds require stratification, which is why I was planing on direct sowing it so it can go through the process naturally. What is the disadvantage to direct sowing?

I planted my seeds outside directly in the ground. Another choice is winter sowing, where you plant the seeds in containers in Dec/Jan and put the containers outside to stratify naturally. Try the WS Forum and click at the top on FAQ for more info.

I wouldn't expect direct sowing to be a problem. This species grows naturally in sandy soils receiving partial sun. Maybe the warning about garden soil was in reference to the need for good drainage?

the link below states a difference as: Lupinus perennis "Leaves are divided into 7 to 11 leaflets" and "A similar species in Minnesota is Large-leaved Lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus), a non-native introduced by gardeners which has become invasive especially along the north shore of Lake Superior. It is overall a larger plant with taller spikes and 9 to 17 leaflets." eta: it is my understanding that there can easily be cross-breeding as well. I hadn't thought to put them in containers outside. That sounds like a very good idea, I think I will try that.

Lycopus, it could be that it was due to the drainage issue. Our soil is for the most part clay, but dry. I'm going to try it in containers over the winter and see how that goes. Thank you for the response.
