What's blooming in your garden?

What perennials are in bloom in your garden? I'm still establishing my gardens, so I don't have a lot to report.

In the sunny areas: Black-eyed Susans are smiling cheerfully even amid the hot, dry weather. Got a couple of flowers on my trumpet vine this year - finally!

Shade: Hostas have just finished up. Hydrangea blooms unfortunately withered in the heat while I was away on vacation. :-(

I've got a second (small) bloom on Shasta Daisy Becky, nice clump of Joe Pye Weed, phlox still going strong, black-eyed susans, and russian sage (lovely). Rose of Sharon, roses and annuals make up the rest of the flowers in my garden at this time. I try to mix it up with annuals, small shrubs and perennials to keep lots of things in flower at all times.

I have mostly roses and most are resting right now. Some are blooming but I am most excited about my Rooguchi Clematis that has bloomed. It is so pretty.

Nekobus - technically I'm in zone 6, but I won't plant anything unless it is hardy to zone 5. This is a "dwarf" columbine - it's only 6" tall at most. The rest of my columbines barely have blossoms on them yet! (Oh - we need 2 or 3 more posts on this thread by the end of today so that we meet my rule of 50 posts to get a May Part II thread. You can vote for a Part II thread - all those in favor, Post a Reply. All those opposed, stay silent!) The camassia - wild hyacinth - decided to open today.

PankajT: So where's your new thread? I think it would be very useful for a lot of people who may hesitate to post, and there's always something new to learn for the more experienced gardeners. As Steve said, you can go to the main New England Gardening page and look at the very top for a link to post a message. Or you can go to the same page and scroll all the way to the bottom past a lot of white space and get to a box that works the same. You don't even have to retype your message since you've already posted. You can use the edit post feature and copy what you wrote here, and then paste that in the new thread. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Back to the blooming thread - I'm getting dizzy with all the beautiful pictures and the succession of new flowers appearing every day! Each garden seems to be on a different schedule, and so is mine. My first daylilies! Hemerocallis 'Orangeman' I just bought a bunch of these on sale this spring from Old House Gardens, and wasn't expecting anything this year (little bitty plants). One of them is blooming already, to my amazement. I love spider-type daylilies. Another daylily, 'Black Eyed Stella', just started also: The first foxgloves/digitalis have started. These planted themselves a few years ago by the rugosa roses and peonies and they match them perfectly, so I've encouraged them to stay. Pink: And white: Viburnum 'Summer Snowflake" is taking off now, while the doublefile viburnum is fading away. The doublefile blossoms are decorating the ground now. The little Calamintha grandiflora is quietly blooming. Along with the little Sedum kamtschaticum sitting next to the cotoneasters and a yucca. Thanks, Dee. Yes, that's it. Haha on the height. When you gave it to me, it was just about our height. I had to tilt it across the back seat and open the window for it to fit in my car. Then, on the trip home, it was raining harder, so I closed the window... on the tallest branch....wasn't thinking. Now, it's just below 5 feet tall. It's still beautiful with so much more flowers this year. Plus, the bees like the flowers! molie, the Hellebore and Oenothera 'Siskyou' and doing great. The Hellebore bloomed earlier this year with burgundy flowers! I didn't take a picture....don't know why. The Oenothera smells so wonderful. -Tina

PankaJt, I loved that photo of your 21-year-old planting of Katsura and chestnut! Though we've been in our house for fewer years, I do appreciate seeing plants that have matured. It's continuity. I'm posting a picture of old hostas that were my mother's. Not too exciting a plant, but every gardener can probably appreciate this sad tale. My brother took over my parents house with wonderful plans to remodel the house itself. One day when I drove over to check out the work, I saw a bulldozer plowing through Mom's gardens and tearing everything apart! All the dogwoods and mountain laurel she planted when the house was built, her iris collection, the peonies and poppies, her favorite columbines, my dad's field stone wall ... all of it was gone! He didn't even ask me if I wanted any of it! I almost burst into tears thinking of all the hours I had been "conscripted" into helping Mom weed her garden, not realizing at the time that all this work would become the seed for my own love of gardening. Along the edge of the yard in a spot the bulldozer had not yet reached was this sad clump of hostas that Mom had planted among some of her favorite pink, white and blue perennials. We rescued them and brought them home, along with some bricks and field stones from the rubble that once was Dad's pathway and wall.

I have black-eyed susans, coreopsis, joe pye weed, a late blooming white hydrangea, butterfly bush, native honeysuckle, roses, geranium sanguinium, mums, heuchera, blue lobelia, oxalis, and clethra. In the non-flowering perennials my viburnums are starting to berry and the grasses are starting to seed. Beautiful. This is my favorite time of year in the garden. I have a few things that will be flowering in the next few weeks: sedum, perennial sunflowers, caryopteris, and remaining mums.

Currently in flower: lobelia, liatris, Joe Pye Weed, tickseed coreopsis, phlox 'Diana', tithonia, agapanthus, echinecia, black eyed susan, yarrow, butterfly weed, butterfly bush, pineapple sage, fennel, globe thistle, cleome, obedient plant as well as some daylillies. Annuals: still have hollyhock, pentas, zinnias aflower.

Clethra alnifola, hummingbird, ruby spice and Cinnamon bark still flowering (though their just beyond 'peak'). Crepe myrtle 'Zuni Princess' as well.

On deck: asters, goldenrod, turtle head, franklinia altamaha.

In berry: Aronia 'Brilliantissima' & 'Meloncarpa'. All hollies (including pudunculosa and verticillata 'Winter Red' & 'Harvest Gold' are full of berris as well as beautybush along with Ilex 'opaca' and various blue girl/boys.

Hummingbirds are now back (since last week) after a long hiatus of raising this year's young. As the 1/2 dozen or so tithonia begin fully flowering, they should be constant visitors to these plants. Had Song Sparrow family in the garden today along with Caroling Wren.

Obedient plant or(Physiostygia?),Kosteletzskya virginica, perennial ageratum or(Euphatorium?),black-eyed Susan'Goldsturm', Trumpet vine or Bignonia (Jersey Peach), Clematis 'Polish Spirit', Lonicera magnifica and 'John Clayton',Clethra 'Sixteen Candles', cut and come again Zinnias, Impatiens, Heavenly Blue morning glories, Mandevilla,Achimenes 'Mexicana Blue'.
