Nice plant, I have two, but no fragrance, no fall color. And rabbits like them. What about Deutzia 'Chardonnay Pearls' for your spot? Great color foliage all season, though no fragrance. Or Spirea 'Ogon'? Fabulous foliage, great bloom right now, good fall color. No pruning except for a little shaping.

I started some seeds from my plants this winter, winter sowing method. First I cleaned the seeds and rubbed them between two sheets of sandpaper to scarify them. I planted them in seed starting trays with clear covers with holes poked in them for ventilation. About a week ago I had sprouts and they now have their first true leaves. I've removed the covers and they seem to be off an running. It hadn't occurred to me to try making tea. I grow them for insects and birds who like the nectar and the little insects the fuzzy flowers support. Here is a link that might be useful: My natives blog

You may get more hits searching for Ceanothus herbaceus. Mature height is less than 1 meter and they get about as wide as tall, so a two foot spacing should be sufficient. I've had one for many years. It's over all maybe 4 feet wide and 2 1/2 feet tall. This year it's done very poorly with a great deal of die back. But the winter was very strange--in mid Feb we had two weeks of temps around 80 and after that it got very cold. I lost a number of shrubs completely and my magnificent Arcostaphylos uva-ursi, which was over 15 feet wide, had over 75% die back. So I'm thinking the NJ Tea will recover next year. BTW, NJ Tea has an enormous, tangled root system and deeply resents any attempt to transplant it once established. I cannot imagine that it would do well in any type of pot.
