3 beautiful hostas from Naylor Creek

They came yesterday afternoon. Striptease, Orange Marmalade and Blue Mouse Ears. They were packed really well and arrived in perfect shape. Striptease has 5 eyes, Orange Marmalade has 4 and Blue Mouse Ears has 6. They are nice size plants. Just soaking them today. Will plant tomorrow.

Thanks for the good recommendations for this nursery. I was not disappointed.

That's a lot more eyes than I have ever gotten from Naylor Creek. Don't believe I ever got a two-eyed plant. Three times I've gotten two one-eyed plants, but I'd rather have one two-eyed plant. Twice I planted both one-eyed plants (Key Lime Pie and Queen of the Seas) in a single hole, and after two full years they still aren't much.

The other time, I planted the two Love Pats in different holes. One is doing OK and will probably one day turn into a hosta. The other is growing into something, but it isn't Love Pat anymore. Pointed leaves. I bought a nice local Love Pat and put it in that hole and put the Naylor Creek Love Pat in a pot to see what finally happens.

This year I bought Empress Wu, and I put it in a protected seedling bed because it's too small and fragile to go out in the real world. I look at it and scratch my head -- this is the world's largest hosta?

Oh yea, I also bought a Jim Matthews a few years back, and that is still a ways from being a serious hosta. That was also two one-eyed plants. One died.

So Naylor's doesn't really impress me much. Nice photos though.

What impresses me is to walk into a local all-purpose nursery and come away with a 50-inch Blue Angel as I did this summer.

Melati, I used to plant my separate eyes of the same hosta in separate pots, but then I got too many pots so I wound up combining them. That works only so far. Like, two were supposed to be alike, but it happened that the 2nd eye of Brother Stefan wasn't variegated, it was a solid green leaf and I did not mix up anything. So I thought I had a sport, it turned out to be I suppose a Tissue Culture Failure TCF. It is healthy, it is out of the same TC batch as my Bro Stefan (who I will no longer show as "BS" for reasons known to Jonny...hehehe). I don't actually know what to call that solid green. I might give it away to my two garden neighbors. I combined my pots of Gold Drop, which is a small, and boy are those growing a lot, and one half the pot bloomed early and the other half late....you'd think it was reblooming, but it is a different part of the pot which blooms separately. Hosta can be so interesting. I have one Powder Keg, and it is holding its streaks boldly so I know you will enjoy growing it.

Oh, my aching back. After a good soak I put 8 in the ground, the rest in pots until I decide where they will go. I was potting the last ones in the dark. Ibuprofen and hot tub, here I come.

I guess just personal preference and hearsay, Papou. I'll be honest...I do not have First Mate. Maybe I am missing something great! I have grown Kabitan, though, and it gets really ratty looking. First Mate is supposed to be a tetraploid form of Kabitan, which means it should have better substance and hold up better. I've read that it is better, but still gets a little tattered. I know for a fact that the rest of the plants on greenguy's list have good - even great - substance and hold up well all season. One possible exception may be Little Jay. It is still too new to know for sure what it will do, but it seems to be pretty sturdy based on what I saw this past season. Like I said, though...I may be missing out.

Nice order, good looking plants, great fix! I got Ringtail a few weeks ago as a result of the alphabet. I have Raspberry Sundae for a couple of seasons now and only gets better and better. I had to look up Paradise Tritone as I never heard of it before. I needed a fix too and recieved an order in mid march and am watching them come up now, Yay hostas! Denis

I had a nice box at the front door when I got home yesterday, and it was 8 hostas that I had won on the auction at the HL. They were all from Naylor Creek, and they were in excellent condition, cool and moist and looking FABULOUS! I hope they stay looking this good til I can get them planted! I haven't counted the eyes, didn't want to disturb the packaging.

I received two from Naylor, via the HL auction earlier this week. Komodo Dragon & Buckshaw Blue. Very nice big healthy fresh plants. I'll buy from them again.
I'm so happy to get Komodo Dragon, love the look of that plant, and the name is fun also.
