So i said i wasn't going to buy any hostas this year.

well, i got a gift card for naylors. SOoooooooo

With a quick look I have picked out these and will probably narrow it down.

I thought it would be fun to get some help with my list. Let me know what you think (remember i want to cut some out) but if you think there is a must have for this year feel free to let me know

I wish i got a halson card because chris really has nice plants and some new ones on his list this year i really want........ maybe i'll just order one, or two from him but that will be a later post.

here is my list from naylors right now

aristocrat - yea i know but i like it

blue mouse ears - can you believe i don't have it yet

clear fork river vally - I have wanted this for awhile due to some pic's i saw - thanks Kent

first mate

garden party - seems similar to below

hollywood lights - seems similar to above

littly jay

proud it is as short as it is

also wanted stitch in time but i think i'll wait until it is cheaper

Aristocrat and Blue Mouse Ears are the only two on your list I have.

Aristocrat IMO is a real beauty and 'stands out in the crowd' I have it in. Friends remark on how 'pretty' it is.

Blue Mouse Ears Is fine if you like mini's. I really don't have the spot to show off the 3 mini's I have. That may be why it is not an eye catcher in my garden.

Greenguy lucky you greatest gift ever! Of the ones on your list , I only have Aristcrat. I got it last spring , it grew 3x in size & was just beautiful till late fall. I have it in filtered shade gets no direct sunlight. I know some say its a dud but so far so good for me here in NJ. ~Dot

Vicky you have very nice list picked out. Here is what I have used from your list. Atom Smasher:-very fertile but thin substance-would cross with a thicker substance hosta- have gotten very good pod set Skylight: nice pod set, most seedlings had round leaves like the parent, got a nice yellow seedling of the mix- will need to cross with a different leaf shape to change leaf-nice powder blue has been passed on to a few streaked seedlings when used as a pollen parent Hacksaw-very fertile, much the same as Atom Smasher As for a streaked hosta, a few of the less expensive would be Christmas Tree Gala and Blue Lighting to name a ocuple. There are a few more on the market which are less expensive but the substance is very thin. Bill Silvers has CTG on his web page for sale. He will probably also be at the AHS convention in Iowa, so you woldnt have to pay shipping if you will be at the convention. He may even have more streaked hostas. These hostas may not bloom the first year. In my opinion if I was to start over there would not be any streaked named hostas I would buy. Have had more luck using the seedlings I grew from getting seeds from other hybridizers on the auctions. First Look Auction is coming up soon. Good luck in your hybridizing program, There is not really a right or wrong where to go here. I started out growing Open Pollenated seeds and had no goal in mind, not sure I still do, mostly just have fun doing crosses and growing OP seeds and see what surprises come up in my seed cups! if you need more time... BTW.. absolve hubby.. he had other things on his mind ... like YOU .. rather than the hosta.. crikey .... have him fill a wheelbarrow with some moist soil.. or even better potting media.... and you could hold them in total shade .. for a month ... especially if your wheelbarrow has rusted holes.. like mine.. and would drain rain water .. in the alternative.. dig one hole... maybe 2 by two feet... and stick them all in there.. and let ma nature HOLD THEM OVER ... until you can get it done right ... focus on YOU .. not the hosta.. blimey ... hope your recovery is as fast as can be ... ken ps: plant ann kulpa as GE... lots of white there... too much shade.. and she will disappear in a few years ... pps: i like the way you blame others.. for your purchases ... lol ... been there.. done that ...

Why, Josephine honey, they are all under $15 if my DH should ask. :) No, seriously, I don't remember it being noticeably heavy in the number of digits, as they say in the bank, somewhere in the "low 2 figure".....but let me check Avalon's catalog...yep, $19 for Stargate. You can look it up at aahostas.com And AA also sells Sweet Standard if they are not out. That's another fragrant streaker. Don't know if it's sterile, just my luck it is......... I am sorry to say that poor Stargate is sterile, per SteveMass. Well, you can't have everything I guess. I'm hoping it can just grow quickly and greet people with its sweet fragrance.....backed up by about a hundred fifty more just as fragrant, for an overwhelming experience. Jo, I do like to dream. Probably right now I have more fragrants in bloom than any other week this summer. Some are very new here, and won't bloom until next year or that's what I expect anyway. I'm watching daily to see which will be the early/mid-season/late bloomers, just like the daylilies. I take pictures all the time it seems. But my lens is fogging over and making halos, it's rained so much my fig tree fell over. We staked it back and it looks okay again, but the ground is extremely saturated right now. High humidity. Two more pepper plants got the blight, even though we were prepared. Part of a small hosta not yet acclimated to the climate, almost croaked, but I caught it and seem to have stopped its imminent passing. We need a couple of days of dry, followed by about an inch of rain twice a week. Sound good to everybody? Then that's what I'm shooting for.

Aristocrat can be very slow growing...but very pretty. Take a look at First Frost or El Nino. Very similar look, but better growing.

Garden Party is an upright grower that will form a huge mound.

Hollywood Lights gets big, but not as big. It forms a more traditional mound. Similar colors, but much wider margin. Completely different leaf shape.

Personally, I would scratch off First Mate. It is an improved Kabitan, but I think the others on your list are still better plants.

I have had Aristocrat and Blue Mouse Ears a couple years, long enough to know I really like both of them. I got El Nino last year. Its great too but quite different than Aristocrat to me. El Nino is much taller, longer leaves, whiter edge. I got Clearfork River Valley, First Mate and Hollywood Lights last year so I can't say much about them yet. I'm not sure what the background of Garden Party is but I chose Hollywood Lights because it is realted to On Stage and Paradise Backstage, both of which I love. I'm hoping it will have the flowing look of those two.

Josh, I have great respect in your reasoning. I got First Mate 2 years ago and seems to be a nice small hosta...what's your reason for suggesting to 'scratch' it? Thanks for your input.

I guess just personal preference and hearsay, Papou. I'll be honest...I do not have First Mate. Maybe I am missing something great! I have grown Kabitan, though, and it gets really ratty looking. First Mate is supposed to be a tetraploid form of Kabitan, which means it should have better substance and hold up better. I've read that it is better, but still gets a little tattered.

I know for a fact that the rest of the plants on greenguy's list have good - even great - substance and hold up well all season. One possible exception may be Little Jay. It is still too new to know for sure what it will do, but it seems to be pretty sturdy based on what I saw this past season.

Like I said, though...I may be missing out.

The question of El Nino vs. Aristocrat came up when I was touring Warren Pollocks. These are his plants, both mature. El Nino seems to be a little more upright and a little more wavy edged.

I have both, but they are not yet mature so I don't know which I like best. I have ordered First Mate. I've seen it mature and loved it. But then I love the minis and smalls. Blue Mouse Ears is a must!
Clear Fork River Valley is on my list. So is Little Jay.

I don't have either Garden Party or Hollywood Lights.

Clovelly and Frosted Frolic are also on my Naylor wish list...and then there is Ruffed Up, Stitch in Time, Mighty Mite...

glad to here some good things about aristocrat. But since I have first frost maybe i will skip it this year - i am trying to cut back the list believe it or not.

I am also going to cut hollywood lights mostly because of lack of information. Also because Garden party gets larger - thanks josh.

and i think i will order the rest

Wow Yardmom what a nice picture of El Nino, now I will be needing one of those too! I keep trying to narrow down the want list & it just gets longer......:)

My experience has been that El Nino is more upright than Aristrocrat and the margin somewhat more even. As far as comparing El Nino with First Frost, El Nino usually has a white margin while First Frost often has a cream margin. I have a young plant of Clear Fork River Valley growing in full sun, which I will post here. Right now just plain green and somewhat puckered. Don
