Naylor Creek/Land of the Giants order arrived

While I was traveling for work out of state yesterday I was hit by a driver who was under the influence. He jumped into my lane and hit me head on. :( Long story short my face, neck back look like I've been in a meat grinder. I'm not feeling so hot so I am wondering if I can leave my new little guys in their hosta hot tubs.

My order arrived while I was in the hospital. I asked my husband to soak them all separately in the buckets I had. And well he put them all together.

Goodness Gracious somehow I forgot to take a picture of this guy.

Do you think they will be ok sitting as is overnight? None of the crowns is in water. I have pretty nasty whiplash so these aren't the best pictures.

Feel free to enable me further with photos of some golds to accompany my blueberry muffin. :)

Would love to see other pictures of any of the plants listed above. Or any other hostas for that matter. :)

Oh, I'm so very sorry! Sending you encouraging thoughts and positive energy- take some time to really take care of yourself. Kudos to hubbie for taking good care of you and your new plants.

I'll leave it to the experts to chime in, but when I had an order arrive and and couldn't plant I was told they'd be just fine soaking for a few days.

You have some beauties there- I know you'll really enjoy them!

Re your babies...they will be 100% fine sitting in water! even longer than a few days. Just change the water, keep it fresh until you can get to them.

They have the perfect root systems - you'd think they had them brushed, they are so perfect! I was actually struck by that.

BBEAUTIFUL hostas and for once, I am glad to be blamed for something, LOL.

You take care of yourself....and...your very own Guardian Angel was on duty ... that watched over you at the time of impact...I am so thankful that "one of our own" is alright!! :-)

Vicky you have very nice list picked out. Here is what I have used from your list. Atom Smasher:-very fertile but thin substance-would cross with a thicker substance hosta- have gotten very good pod set Skylight: nice pod set, most seedlings had round leaves like the parent, got a nice yellow seedling of the mix- will need to cross with a different leaf shape to change leaf-nice powder blue has been passed on to a few streaked seedlings when used as a pollen parent Hacksaw-very fertile, much the same as Atom Smasher As for a streaked hosta, a few of the less expensive would be Christmas Tree Gala and Blue Lighting to name a ocuple. There are a few more on the market which are less expensive but the substance is very thin. Bill Silvers has CTG on his web page for sale. He will probably also be at the AHS convention in Iowa, so you woldnt have to pay shipping if you will be at the convention. He may even have more streaked hostas. These hostas may not bloom the first year. In my opinion if I was to start over there would not be any streaked named hostas I would buy. Have had more luck using the seedlings I grew from getting seeds from other hybridizers on the auctions. First Look Auction is coming up soon. Good luck in your hybridizing program, There is not really a right or wrong where to go here. I started out growing Open Pollenated seeds and had no goal in mind, not sure I still do, mostly just have fun doing crosses and growing OP seeds and see what surprises come up in my seed cups! My order arrived from Naylor today as well. Gary sure has been busy, and likely to be more so even as the March Madness comes to an end. Have you noticed all their AUCTIONS? Well, I have. And though I placed my order before December, they were nice enough to add the two winners to my Monday shipment, for a better shipping price total overall. So if you think your order from late 2013 (mine was placed in October) is soon to ship, check out their HL Auctions for a lagniappe hosta or two which can piggyback with your original order. It worked for me. I have mine unwrapped but not pictured yet. Maybe tomorrow. I have Erotica, Parthenon, The Sweetest Thing, Irish Eyes, Stargate #2, Bamse, with auction winners Android and Monsoon.

Yeah, the 2 yr old Dick Ward I have (from PDN) is about as hot a yellow gold in the middle, heavy substance, and the dark green border. Very little has bothered it from being moved out of the ground last fall into a pot, where it presently is, no slug problems, and don't think I have any sawfly larva issues either. You'll love having that to look at. It just glows! I also got my order from LOTG, and they could not ship the hypoleuca due to frost damage, will give me a $25 credit, wish they'd have called, I'd have asked for extra Masquerades or a bigger venusta. My Irish Luck was a single eye, big around as a leek though, and it is fine. The Honeybells has about 4 big shoots and about 8 or more eyes that are trying to poke up. It looks like a division of a mature plant to me, a humongous fat round bunch that has a satisfactory set of roots to hold it up. I got a So Sweet which was a mature division too, sort of sideways growing, and I replanted it sideways as well, because the big mass of roots and crown had a lot of eyes ready to pop up it seemed. And yes, Ken, I taped the leafed out guys up by their petioles. The problem plant was the small venusta, which I am giving some intensive care in a terrarium. It had a nice top okay, but there was only one big thick 1/8" thick root going straight down with only a few fuzzy little feeder roots on the side. Today I dosed it with RootTone, put it in a small pot with new media, and closed the lid until it started condensing, then I gave some ventilation. I've rooted a lot of things this way, much easier. I figure the nursery is familiar with the return/repeat customers and has no idea what my preferences are, or my gardening style. So I'll probably order from them again, just do it at the end of the season instead of the beginning. Wonder if I can get a hypoleuca at the end of the season? Oh yeah, I always comment on the way the order was packed, and LOTG packed perfectly, very close together to keep the wrapped plants from drying out any more than could be helped. They were not wilted on arrival, nor damaged. Still one order yet to arrive, from Savory. Also in the far north. They were my last order placed, so I just lumped everything else with them. Next time, I will have a better plan. Getting 12 plants so late in my growing season is a problem I wish to avoid. Oh yeah. And I have a First Choice winning, Afterglow, that is supposed to ship soon from Walters. So far no notice though.

I am not used to having so much class in my garden! I may need to require people to put a neck tie on before entering. My Dorothy has a flower spike in coming so I will be VERY sure to put prospective love matches for her within pollinating distance ;) Ken, I was amazed at how turgid many of my plants were! No tape needed! Here are Dorothy and IAT standing at salute! Seducer however... not very seductive and required ample scaffolding... Will post more pics as I get plants situated. First year garden so a lot of moving around to find the right spot! Margaret

if you need more time... BTW.. absolve hubby.. he had other things on his mind ... like YOU .. rather than the hosta.. crikey ....

have him fill a wheelbarrow with some moist soil.. or even better potting media.... and you could hold them in total shade .. for a month ...

especially if your wheelbarrow has rusted holes.. like mine.. and would drain rain water ..

in the alternative.. dig one hole... maybe 2 by two feet... and stick them all in there.. and let ma nature HOLD THEM OVER ... until you can get it done right ...

focus on YOU .. not the hosta.. blimey ...

hope your recovery is as fast as can be ...

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Ken, I think I've taken this blame game /enablement to a whole new level! Can I blame Bob Axmere for Temptation and Irish Luck? They were after all on the hosta library auction. :P

Oh, Kate, I'm so sorry about your accident! Praying for a speedy recovery for you (and sobriety for the person who hit you.....sheesh!)

You picked some real lovelies, there, and great sizes. Ice Age Trail always catches the eye for a double take, and Irish Luck is such a favorite. All great choices.
