CT cooperative extension plant sale?

Hi all,

I seem to remember that there is a plant/tree/shrub sale put on by the CT CES (or maybe some other entity?) in different counties every year, for which you have to order early. They sell native plants and food plants, etc., at a good price. I miss the deadline every year. I can't find any info about it on the web - - does anyone know where to get the order forms?

I wanted to get some blueberry/raspberry bushes and maybe a compost bin and rain barrel if they have them. If anyone knows of other CT sources for these sorts of things at below retail cost, I'd very much appreciate if you shared. Thanks!

Paige, just last night I was reading through my mail and saw an ad in a publication for the North Central Conservation District's annual plant sale.

Phone # is 860-875-3881, or www.conservect.org/northcentral

Orders due by April 3rd. Pick-up April 18th, 19th (doesn't say where. I remember one in, I think, Hamden last year - not sure if this is the same group).

From ad:

"All proceeds to support conservation programs. Large selection of native plants, deciduous trees and shrubs, perennials, evergreen seedlings, wildlife and wildflower seed mixes..."

Thanks Dee, that's it! I couldn't find it anywhere, I guess because I was googling cooperative extension, rather than conservation district. Too bad, this year they don't appear to have rain barrels or compost bins, but they do have the blueberries and raspberries and some other stuff I want.
Thanks again, and if anyone else is doing pickup at Auer Farm in Bloomfield on the Saturday, let me know!

Are you aware of what the Ext. has to offer? Do you use it? Do you know about the Master Gardener program, and are you one? Have recent cut-backs in funding hurt the gardening community? I have been aware of the Extension Service since I was a 4-H club member raising chickens. My mother belonged to the "Home Demonstration Club" in that era when the female agent was the "Home Demonstration Agent," teaching canning and sewing and such. The Master Gardener program as I perceive it is an effort to recruit volunteers who are literate enough to dissiminate information on gardening through the extension office. Sitting through the requisite hours of class does not guarantee that the 'Master Gardner' knows anything about actually planning and planting. I heard a horror story about an MG who headed up a group to plant a butterfly garden -- clueless about what plants were appropriate or that you didn't buy plants before the plot was readied, much less spray the caterpillars! The MGs in my own area are knowledgeable people who sometimes write for the local newspaper. They use extension materials as resources and do a good job. They had prior backgrounds in gardening and writing. I've never participated in the program because of the distance to the training site. I did read an entire manual online. I use University Extension web sites from around the country for information for personal use. I don't bother busy agents in this time of cutbacks with questions that I can research for myself. Amazing what you can find, in an intensive web search. I'm always reminded of the story about the old farmer who was approached by the young county agent who wished to advise him on new methods. Hi defrost…another early bird. :-) I'm adding to my houseplant collection this winter, which is pretty depleted. Some winters, I just have no interest, but this year I do, probably because this summer my garden time was minimal. Right now, I have some succulents that need repotting and I'm looking for decorative, ceramic probably. I'm going to try to find some shallow pots in a small to medium size for now. I have larger ceramic pots, but they seem like the wrong shape and size. By the way, if anyone knows who sells the best houseplants, besides Logee's in CT, because I haven't got time to take a trip there. I usually end up at Russell's and I stay away from Mahoney's, so I'm looking for somewhere new to try.

I've bought stuff there. Awesome quality, a few hard to find plants, but a bit pricey. Their Beach Plums did better then the ones I got from County and State sales and the only American Persimmon I've ever got to survive came from there. They carried large potted Pitch Pine last year.

Oh, you are welcome Jane (and Paige too!)! I'm glad someone else could take advantage of this. Every year I seem to fill out an order form which then sits on my desk till I find it the week after the pick-up date....

Today it feels like spring (I'm way in the northwest corner), but there is still snow in my yard. Can't wait,can't wait, can't wait -- my mantra

Wow, Thanks for the info. I've already circled all the things I'm going to order. Does anyone know if what size the Blueberry bushes are. I want to plant a dozen or more this year and can't decide if I should order all from here or some older plants from Nourse Farms.
