small foundation shrubs for a sunny dry spot?

I moved to a new house recently and I want to get rid of some of the foundation shrubs. They appear to be japanese barberry and I have concerns they will be invasive.

Any recommendation for a native that would look nice as a small foundation shrub?

It's a southern exposure, pretty dry spot.

I live in a fairly formal uptight neighborhood so if you can recommend something that stays tidy-looking without a lot of fuss that would be ideal. Bonus if it's something that is attractive to butterflies or birds.

Thanks for any ideas.
