my new bed under red maple trees.,oh my!

Hubby tilled an area a week ago for me to move the over crowded hostas from a bed in back yard. Got them all planted ( moved the big ones like Kens post on moving large hostas). then this maple tree stuff started showing up on here. So I guess I will find out how long they grow under and around them in my yard, the lack of water here might kill them long before the Maple trees will. I have been watering them but I don't think it's the same as Mother Natures

Wait a bit longer - the damage to various JMs around here went from a few injured leaves to complete defoliation, depending on the tree and the location. Some have begun to grow new leaves and some are still sitting there. As long as the cambium - the layer right under the bark - is still green when you scratch lightly on a twig, the tree is alive. You may have some tip die-back to trim off, but the tree itself should be fine. Most trees have auxilliary buds; they will grow and leaf out soon. Wait until the leaves are clearly growing before you do any trimming, and be careful of the emerging leaves. Resist the temptation to clean off the old leaves, unless you did it straight away - you might damage the emerging buds. Water the tree well, but don't drown it, as JMs don't like standing in water. And don't fertilize until the tree has almost all the leaves out, and then lightly with a slow release fertilizer.

My Red Bed disappointed last year, partly due to drought and partly my own doing. Already this year, I've had the splendor of 'Blackout' asiatic lilies. They kind of bloomed alone, but I can see them from the kitchen window and they are stunners. There were far fewer poppies this year; I'll try to remedy that in the fall. Daylilies are forming scapes: Kent's Favorite II, Little Business and Sammy Russell. I've planted several Castor Bean seedlings and have four more to place. Pride of Barbados has sprouts from the roots on two of the seedlings I planted last year, I'm excited about that. I have seedling red Porterweeds growing on to put out there for butterfly nectaring. When I look out the window, I see what it is going to be rather than the rather skimpy patch it is now. You will love 'Empress of India' nasturtiums -- at least, I do. They have dark foliage and the blossoms are scarlet. Mine are not in the Red Bed, they'll be leaving soon when the weather gets really hot here. Nell

Jo, I "think" I see buds on the tree. Reason for the quotation marks is it's just a bit blurry to my eyes, but it does appear there are viable buds on the plant. where in creation are you? And are other maples greening out in your area? It's been a cool/ fairly dry spring where I happen to live, and that's not conducive to rapid greening out of plants. Give it time. Also realize, a tree in a container is under constant stress. That's just not a good growing environment. Not saying don't do it-I'm sure you've got your reasons-but do be aware, plants are typically somewhat stunted by such growing conditions as found in a pot.

Tom, I have always enjoyed manual labor and getting dirty. :) Very good point Embothrium. My whole yard is made from "fill sand". It is straight sand with no soil or organics. Looking at the local topography it's probably at least 15-20' deep. Under that may be some clay and organics as the Anclote River is near by. The sand most likely was over burden from phosphate mining here FL but could have just as easily come from sand mining. So I assume the sand is going to easily drain. The soil I use to replace the sand is also fast draining but of course contains organic material and probably packs looser than the sand. You are absolutely right that I am forcing some larger plants to deal with different types of soil as their root systems grow. My experience is most plants don't do well starting out in sand, so I let them start in better soil and make the move to sand after they are larger. Obviously not the best solution but a compromise that works most of the time. If you have any suggestions of a better way, I would appreciate hearing them. Cause digging out wet heavy sand is hard work. :) Anna

Very nice hostas! I would love to have a problem with crowded hostas! Your new bed is pretty. It is a shame maples are such root hogs. How old is your main bed?

Very pretty! Make sure when you water, water the entire area (not just the hostas) all the way out to the Maples' dripline so those nasty roots don't have to seek water where your plants are.

I agree with the others, you are still crowded in the original bed. You need to either make more beds or extend the others. Remember, hostas can take some sun if that is an issue for you.

It is quite obvious to me from the looks of your photos that you are quite GOOD at growing hostas. They're in BEAUTIFUL shape! Grass is overrated - Go forth and dig some more! ;o)

Beautiful, what wonderful hostas!

I don't think your king maples are going to be a problem for your hostas. Like Char advised, water the whole area and the maples won't know the hostas are there.

I have several huge clumps of Undulata Albo-marginata and an un-named green type that have all thrived under a Norway maple for 20+ years now. They pop up through the pachysandra in the Spring and look wonderful all season. I do nothing for them, not even water.
