in case anyone was wondering...... I rooted some in water and replanted out in ground. :)

Thanks for posting the tip! I failed in an attempt to grow mountain mint from seed this spring, so it's nice to have another option.

Thank you so much. -I actually got the idea for this tutorial last year, when we had a discussion about propagation in a coffee break at work, last summer, where I found out, that most of my colleagues didn't know that this was a possible way of propagating. -Someone had actually bought five new red currant plants for her garden, of a variety, that she already owned (which was the onset for our discussion). I bought some new mints a week ago (chocolate-, strawberry-, grapefruit- and apple mint)... needless to say, I'm doing this with some of those as well ;-)

Yes, it is possible! I have a spearmint plant that someone mulched to heavily and it never really grew well last year and this year it didn't come back. Mulch is the only thing that I can think of that may have killed it. I had to remove unwanted mulch from the lavendar too. BTW...I tend a community herb garden that others try to tend too without enough knowledge, well meaning I'm sure.

Thank you so much everyone! Today I finished potting up into large pots all the mint plants I have. I am kind of embarrassed of how many different kinds of mint I collected this summer. And it was all worth it. Not in any particular order, Apple mint, Moroccan mint, Mojito mint, Lime mint (2 distinct types), Orange mint (also two distinct types), Yerba Buena, Lavender mint, Eau de Cologne mint. I am really surprised how pleasant, distinct and different the scents of Lime, Orange, Eau de Cologne and Lavender mint are. Very little 'mint' and a lot of something else and very uplifting. Apple, Moroccan and Mojito are variations of spearmint. The most beautiful I find are Apple mint and Lime mint and these two are the most vigorous. Mojito mint grows very tall on these stiff, erect stems. It really is lovely to garden and be surrounded by these fragrances.

I just pull some out of the ground and stick it in someplace else. Actually, it's becoming a tad bit invasive, P. muticum, that is. The other one, I think it's P. tenuifolum, is less invasive.

Mountain mints are related to regular mints, but are in a separate genus and are not, as far as I know, used for flavoring foods, at least not very widely used. The mint family includes many genera including the mints used for flavoring (mostly in genus Mentha), bee balms (genus Monarda), and Mountain Mints (genus Pycnanthemum). If you have grown any mint such as Spearmint (Mentha spicata) you would recognize Mountain mints as close relatives. Mountain Mints have herby or minty smell to the leaves and spread like garden mints, although not quite as rapidly as some. There are a number of species native to the eastern US (PA has about 8), most of which grow pretty easily in the garden or meadow. They aren't spectacular in flower like bee balms, but are easy, attractive, and native, so they are pretty popular with wildflower gardeners.

Mountain mints are not as agressive, attract butterflies, and often have attractive white or silvery pubescent foliage. Best of all, same minty flavor and makes good tea (should be avoided though if pregnant).
