New to Gardening

Any seeds that will bloom this fall if started now?

A really dumb question, I'm sure. My Fiance looked at me like I was crazy....BUT...I've received many seeds thanks to the kind people here at Gardenweb. Are there any seeds that could be planted now to bloom by fall, (keep in mind it doesn't get cold here until December)?

If this is absurd, just ignore the question! :)

Many annuals should show some blooms by then. Marigolds come to mind. Probably petunias.

Many perennials can be sown now, but they probably won't come up until spring.

A bit of reference work is required. Look up the average number of days to germinate and add in the average number of days from germination to bloom. You also need to consider if the seed requires a cold period before germination (that can be faked by using refrig/freezer), which often adds another month or two to the time needed for germination.

Many marigolds take 5 to 10 days to germinate (we'll use "10") and another 45 days to bloom. That totals 55 days or about 2 months if all goes well. If you have 2 months until frost, you can plant now and enjoy at least a few blooms; using row cover to protect the new plants [from frost] should give you more time to enjoy - actually, in your zone 9, there should be more than a couple months available for blooming.

The new canes (primocanes) should be all green. But yeah it would be hard to tell because of flourocanes coming from the stumps. Probably green too! Again I have read it is best to just remove these, as the low growth and stump is prime-time for fungus. Forgo the summer crop. If you want a summer crop next year, only remove top third. I myself am expecting over 150 berries from 3 canes on the summer crop of ever bearing Fall Gold cultivars. So I am harvesting both crops. I disagree with the academics and others who say you should skip this crop. It is as big or bigger than the fall crop. I think it may depend where grown, as some I have talked to are unable to harvest a large summer crop. I seem to be having no problems at all. The plants grew numerous more laterals and are teeming with buds. I counted over 30 flower clusters on 3 canes. Sorry but it seems silly to waste 150 to 200 raspberries. The only negative is the primocanes are smothered by these old canes. But I guess on summer bearing one has to deal with this too!

Lots of great ideas...I was thinking of doing pansies...calendulas...I have a great patch going now that will keep blooming until frost, but I do have some different varieties I could try. Parsley, Would be perfect too because it doesn't bloom until 2nd year and I plant it more for the flowers for butterflies and other beneficials...lots of biennials I could try, good idea Joann. Fran, I am going to have to look and see if I have marigolds. I have some white ones I bought in the spring that are doing great. No room for zinnias or Hollyhocks. Snaps are an idea. Four OClocks, won't bloom before frost at this point, would they? Those I planted in the spring still have no buds on them. Northerner, I will probably start peas, just too warm here at the moment. Gnomey, I have all the lupine, gallardia and butterfly weed I can use, but thanks for the idea. Appreciate the help! :-)

Almost anything will do well now, planted in the fall. We just planted two trees. I just bought an American Beautyberry for fall color (purple berries). The berries on my spicebush tree are turning red now too. Pansies going in now I would expect to last til around January and then I might replant them then b/c they will do well til about March in this area.

Truthfully, it would actually be more helpful to you if you told us what kind of seeds you DO have. Don't you think? This is sort of like a guessing game, and you might not come out with any help at all! So, tell us what kinds of seeds and we can probably provide some specific information.

that's a really good point, I thought of that as well. Some of the seeds I have are on my trade list, but I haven't updated that list in a while so I will have to do so when I get home.

The short zinnias might do it for you.

Nigella will come up andthe seedlings will stay green through the winter, then it will bloom in spring. But it won't last all summer. I like to do it that way so I have something green in the bed,and it's early color before the perennials and annuals really get going.

I agree....the little zinnia's might be your only option for bloom this late in the season. I presume that they are the Zinnia angustifolia?

I'd have to check on the type of Zinnia.

Thanks for all of your input, I will try the Nigella and the Zinnia and see what happens.
