native plant that acts like a shrub

but isn't as large....

my neighbor is careless and i need to hide an eyesore. so i need something thickly leaved. i live in new york (z6) and have about half shade, 3 hours of mid-day sun. this would be planted next to dicentra eximia. ideally it would be about 4-5 feet tall but only about 2-3 feet wide. hence, the non-shrub but shrub-like query. any suggestions are welcome!!

(and hopefully one day i will be experienced enough to be able to answer some of my own questions!)

Ilex is nice. Some you would have to keep in check by pruning. I like Dahoon. It has larger leaves than most hollies but it will get big if you let it.

Winterberry is nice too. It's deciduous but you get wonderful red berries for winter interest and there are lots of named cultivars with differing characteristics.

Viburnum is another good one with lots of species and cultivars to choose from.

Cornus Racemosa is fabulous and hardy but may be a bit wider then what you're looking for. None the less, it deserves mention.

Yes, I'm using red mulch in the front garden, nothing in the back, and I put it I believe May-june. Plants were doing great so far until a few weeks ago...They were using regular mulch I believe. It didn't have color. Maybe from a tree that they cut and shredded.They were trying to keep everything as chemical free as they could, and I'm trying to do it as well. But not having any previous experience in gardening I think I bit more than I could chew. My Japanese Maple trees in the back and a Coniferous in the entrance look like they have scorched random branches. never seen this before, so of course I am super worried. Wax myrtle and Yaupon Holly are the first ones that come to mind. If its not too dry, Osmanthus Americanus (Devilwood) may work too. Carolina Cherry Laurel and Yellow Anise are good privacy shrubs too, but im not sure if they'd be poisonous to your dog.

Full sun flowers might include: Penstemon, clumping Solidago (for fall interest), Lobelias if it is moist enough, Rudbeckia or coneflower. I think that it might be too hot for Heuchera - that would be true for Georgia. As to grasses - I think that is a personal preference. I don't find a lot of them available in nurseries. But Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is certainly very nice if you can get it.
