The wild trees are probably one of the following: Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) Pin Cherry (Prunus pensylvanica) Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) naturalized cultivated cherry such as Mazzard (Prunus avium) All of these probably have pollen that is compatible with cultivated varieties, and that is a fairly close distance, but it's unlikely that all the factors such as flowering season, time of pollen release and/or receptivity, and insect preference, would line up perfectly to make that happen. Then again, I'm no expert, and this is just a guess. If your hoping to rely on this for infertile varieties, you'd be out of luck I think, but then again, if you're worried about this crossing somehow affecting your cultivated cherries, you can probably relax.

Pistacia chinensis is said to grow well in Tuscon. You could probably confirm that but I don't doubt it , having one myslef. It makes quite a nice shade tree, and it is the easiest tree you can imagine. It grows three foot a year or more with some irrigation, and has super strong wood. In it's second year, ours survived easily the great drought and heat spell of 2012, in which ten percent of all trees in Texas died. It needs pruning it's first few years due to codominant limbs. It's an ugly duckling that grows up to be a stunner. If you plant the male, there is no chance of it reseeding. It is a true earth friendly tree, needs little input from man, highly disease resistant, and puts on a show in the fall. It's deep rooted, wind resistant, and will survive on twelve inches of rain a year.

Sherry, I once posted on the Florida Garden Forum asking what people thought was the best tree for wild life in their area. I stated that I thought it was the Prunus Serotina. It is listed as a host for a bunch of butterflies, including the red-spotted purple, tigers and other butterflies and moths. Also, many birds enjoy the cherries when they ripen. I have to say, however, that my tree, which is now over forty-feet high does not seem to get many tigers and I can never recall seeing a red-spotted purple. I also have a huge Sweet Bay Magnolia that doesn't seem to attract many tigers. Come to think of it my Spicebush does't attract many spicebush butterflies either. I keep looking for cats and don't see any. I do have a fine crop of wasps, however.

"subgenus" may be more appropriate (or maybe not, taxonomists have put both sweet and sour cherries into the subgenus Cerasus). All these different cherry species are very closely related, if one wants to consider them different species. This is one example where the line separating different species is not a clear one. It could even be possible to consider the different cherry families as subspecies. After all, if they can freely interbreed and hybridize with each other, can they not be considered members within the same species? (by this definition we could divide all cherries into only 2 groups: those with 16 chromosomes and those with 32) Or one could attempt to divide cherries into different families: Sweet cherries (P. avium), sour cherries, Black cherries plus Capulin native to the American continent (put into same group), and Asian flowering cherries. Perhaps better classification could be provided if taxonomists utilized multiple degrees of species relatedness/separation, because it is ambiguous whether some of the different cherries should be classified as entirely separate species or subspecies within a singular species, neither of which would be wholly accurate.
