Blue Flower I Can't Identify

Dropping by from the tree forums

I've had this collection of blue blooming plants growing around a red maple now for a few years.

They're probably from a "wildflower" seed packet my wife spread around, I suspect they're the only ones that lived down by the tree. Oh, and rabbits seem to like them. One I dug up and put in a drier spot by some yellow leafed sumacs was ate up by the rabbits pretty quickly.

Interesting, naturalized I guess? Wikipedia lists it as European. Even says this is becoming rare naturally in England.

So, is this an "exotic" plant like my Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) which apparently doesn't matter if I plant it. Or is it invasive like mimosa where I should avoid it?

Yes! That's it, thanks! And reading about care reqs., I'm thinking that mine needs more watering (the irrigation was broken when I moved in and hasn't worked for who know how long), not necessarily more sun. Does anyone agree/disagree?

Regarding the grass, you might contact the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, which has staff who help homeowners with growing different types of plants. There's an office at the nearby UH Manoa campus where you can talk with someone, or you can call them. There's a variety of grass that grows in the shade. It's not a commercial variety -- more like a weed. It's got hairy leaves and can't be cut with a lawnmower because the leaves are so thin and flexible that they slide between the blades. Avocados don't ripen until after they are picked. That's fortunate because you can leave them on the tree until you want to eat them. You just have to plan ahead.

The way someone here is going to recognize the shrub is if you show a shoot with at least several complete leaves visible. Also a habit photo of the bush itself would not be amiss, as would any good shots of mature winter buds or other distinctive parts that may be present, including fresh or even spent fruits.

kathy, Thanks for the guess- it sort of does look like Camassia, but I think I've figured out (with the help of a fellow GW'er) that it is Phyteuma spicatum. Here is a photo off the web of the Phyteuma And, here is a photo I took of a stand of wild Camassia!

Well, they do look like Bachelor's Buttons... definitely garden escapees. Here in Connecticut we usually just see various knapweeds, which are very closely related and also alien species (with the exception of the American Knapweed... the only native Centaurea I've heard of). Many people grow Bachelor's Buttons, so I don't think you have to worry about it taking over your lawn, but the choice is yours. Needless to say, if the plant is invading the wild habitats in your area, then planting them in your garden will likely contribute to helping the alien species gain a larger foothold.
