Natives grafted on Oak roots

In my travels this last weekend I came accross a nursery that sold most of it's woody natives grafted on oak roots, dogwood, service berry, redbud etc. This was the first time I had seen this. The nursery was in Eastern Missouri. Is grafting on oak roots common in other parts of the country. Supposedly makes for a longer living plant but I would think on own roots would be better.

Any thoughts?
