Now that I've finally figured out what Black-eyed Susan seedlings look like, could anyone describe what purple coneflower seedlings look like? Thanks!

They're very similar to BES seedlings, except for a few distinctions. Purple coneflowers are more slick/shiny, not hairy like the BES; also they often have a pinkish stem, just above soil level. I have a mixed bed of BES and purple coneflowers, and those are the two chief differences between their seedlings, to my eyes. I'm trying to weed out the purple coneflowers, as they're just a little too aggressive for that particular bed. But, I fear I may have lost a few black-eyed susans along the way...

Definitely shinier as small seedlings. Otherwise quite similar. Coneflower seedlings will stay quite small the first year (no more than a few leaves), while rudbeckias will grow to a foot or so (but won't bloom) the first year. Right now, coneflower seedlings have maybe three leaves, while rudbeckias are about 6 inches tall. (I'm referring to volunteers in the flower beds, not seeds deliberately planted at particular times.)

Hi, It is none of the above. You should be finding light brown cone shaped things like in this photo. http://echinacea.umn.edu/images/achenes.jpg The brown around the edge is not always so dark. It pretty much is, Katrina. I found out last year when mine didn't germinate. Found out that I need to stratify them. I'm also in 7a. So I threw them into the freezer for 3 weeks, I was so sure they wouldn't germinate I took them out and just left them lying on the kitchen table among a bunch of other seed-starting stuff. About five days later I decided I might as well deal with them. To my surprise, they'd begin sprouting and were imbedding themselves into the paper towel! LOL But they ended up fine--and bloomed just fine, too. This year I winter sowed a few more.

Irma, it has been my experience that they take at least two years to bloom from seed and I have never gotten much out of them from seed. There not aggressive and often get killed by the weeds or die from heat or lack of water or to much water. I personally have only been able to get them to grow well from ones already started and in a part shade protected from the hottest part of the day. That being said I have found them growing in the wild and along road sides in the middle of nowhere and doing just fine with out human help. Go figure right. Can't get to grow well at home but finds hundreds on side of road.

unless its Echinacea angustifolia which has leaves that are fuzzy (pubescent)kinda rough and darker green with a prominent mid-vein.

Maybe I'm lucky, but my purple coneflower seedlings get really big the first year, making full clumps with several crowns.
