Not much you can do. The critters recognize the natives, I think. The only solution is to have so many plants that no matter how much they eat it doesn't matter, and to spread things around so they don't find all of a species. They love boltonia, so I don't put it all in one place, and they always miss some. Same for NE and sky-blue asters and coneflowers. Every time I put in just one or two of something I hold my breath, because I know if the rabbits like it, it probably won't make it (having that problem with Ruellia right now). For other things, there are so many seedlings and established plants they can eat to their little hearts' content. Also, they sometimes eat certain plants down to the ground in spring, but once there's lots to eat, they sample other things, and the plants recover.

i have used cayenne pepper to some success. but you have to reapply it after every rainfall or heavy dews. of course this year we have been so dry that hasnt been much of a problem.

as elaine says more plants help. i have been trying to grow new jersey tea but wasnt sure how it would do in the soil that i have so i only got two plants. the rabbits of course went to those first and then moved on the coneflowers. i hope they recover as the tea plants are nothing but little sticks right now. they do make new leaves but its awfully hard to keep the rabbits off of them.

Some of the local dollar stores here sell coated wire baskets that are large enough to place over top of newly planted items. I've used them to deter rabbits from chewing almost anything small or newly planted. It also keeps the squirrels from digging.
I remove the handle from the basket, invert it over the planting. I have purchased the black coated baskets since they are almost inconspicuous.

Marigolds arent' natives, but they work in my garden to keep rabbits away. When I deadhead them, I sprinkle the spent blossoms in among plants where I don't grow the marigolds, and the smell helps there too. It doesn't go away with the rain either.

Thanks, some great ideas here. I remember planting Marigolds in my vegetable garden in Colorado to keep the aphids away, it did quite a good job.

The wire basket idea sounds good, too.

Cayenne pepper has STOPPED the chippies from digging up my flower pots and has reduced the deer chomping on flower buds.

Yes, you have to reapply after rain. This year, it looks like I might not have to reapply at all. Sigh.

My meighbor planted marigolds along with tomatoes and herbs. The rabbits neatly avoided the marigolds but still ate the parsley down to the ground.
