Vegetable nurseries in New Jersey

Hi all,

We've had many threads about nurseries in NJ, but as I recall they were not predominantly vegetable nurseries. Or maybe vegies are sold in different places than flowers?

This is my first year (after gardening with flowering plants and herbs for 7 years) to be growing vegies.

So any suggestions about good places to buy vegie plants?

Particularly in or near central Jersey (middlesex county)

For a huge selection of tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants along with some other stuff - try Cross Country Nursery in Kingwood (near Flemington). The really specialize in pepper plants and are also available by mail order.

I live near Haddonfield, in Camden county, NJ and am trying my hand at growing figs for the first time this year. I got one tree (variety unknown - maybe Celeste?) at a local farmer's market last September. Per instructions I left it outside 'til the leaves fell and then wintered it over in the basement - but it started growing! Anxious to get it in the ground I made the mistake of planting it in the side yard (western exposure) in early April. We'd had some quite warm weather that fooled me into thinking spring had come early. It had not. The tree suffered terribly in a windstorm with sustained winds over 40 mph and the snow that hit a week later. losing all its leaves and killing the growing tips of all the shoots. The good news is that the tree sprouted new shoots from four of the five "trunks". It is now doing just fine and enjoying a bit of a growth spurt, although I'll be surprised if it yields any fruit this season. Today I purchased a second fig tree. This one is a Hardy Chicago from Lowe's. I put it into a 12" plastic pot where it will stay for at least the first year or so. I plan on bringing this one into my enclosed but unheated porch next winter. A friend and neighbor also has a fig tree of unknown variety that has survived one winter outdoors. I'll try and get a cutting or two from her to plant next year. I look forward to seeing which one performs best for me.

New York state gardener/farmer Jesse Eldrid specializes in growing heavy, tall, and large vegetables and annual plants. On October 25th, 2007, after a long summer of working, watching, and waiting, he finally contacted county officials in order to obtain a legitimate measurement of the Amaranthus Australis plant he had been growing since the beginning of the year. When Jesse contacted the local bureau of weights and measures, he knew that he had a record-breaking plant -- but he didn't know that his plant would be almost twelve feet (11.98) taller than the the goal he had set for himself in the existing record: the official measurement of the plant, he would learn that afternoon, was 27'10". In the early Spring months of 2007, Jesse received several amaranth seeds from the USDA NCRPIS (United States Department of Agriculture, North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station). Although one wouldn't think it from the size of the mature plant, Amaranthus seeds themselves are actually quite small (smaller than the head of a pin.) Germinating them was fairly difficult, however. Once he managed to get a handful of young plants growing well, he knew one of them was destined to be huge. On May 15th, when Jesse transplanted the young seedlings outside, they started growing rapidly. The plant that grew the fastest also happened to have the largest trunk (measuring almost five feet around) which may have helped the plant grow significantly taller than normal. (An average "trunk" would have a five to eight inch circumference.) As the temperatures rose, the plant grew faster and faster. Competition, too, was on the rise. In Spring, Jesse shared a small number of cuttings among friends, and their plants had begun to take on considerable height at around this time, as well. As it turned out, many of these cuttings exceeded the 15' benchmark, some even stretched to 20+ feet. In the early autumn, near the end of the amaranth's life cycle, Jesse's record-breaking plant was still growing several feet per day. Just before the official measurement, the plant also began producing flowers which also contributed to the overall height of the amaranth. Another factor contributing to the overwhelming size of the plant was the amount of water it received per day -- approximately 30 gallons per plant, per day. In order to give the plant extra support (and to determine the benchmark for the old record) Jesse built a fifteen foot tall trellis for the amaranth. It didn't take long for the plant to outgrow it, though. By the middle of August, it was no longer possible to measure the plant with a ladder alone. (For the official measurement in October, professional arborists were called in, and a bucket-truck was necessary to get a measurement from the very top of the plant.) Jesse Eldrid has been growing unusual plants for many years, and gardening is a life-long obsession for him. In the future, he plans on challenging the millet, sorghum, and historic corn records (for height.) He also intends, one day, to beat his own amaranth record. By growing crops such as these, Jesse hopes to raise awareness about the natural world and the potential for alternative energy.

Close to your area is Miele Green House in Clark A good assortment of all kind of healthy plants at a reasonable price. Why do you not plant seeds? Most vegetable seeds germinate in less than 10 days. Lettuce, carrots and radishes can be planted April 1st. To get a head start, buy broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprout plants.

I'm just a newbie and haven't been to any of the other places suggested, but last year I went to Brock Farms in Freehold and thought the selection was pretty awesome. I got 3 types of tomatoes, jalapeno, cayenne, habanero, italian & orange bell peppers, herbs, cucumber, & zuchinni squash and they all grew wonderfully. I can also add that my friend who is a Master Gardener was also impressed with their selection. They have another location in Colts Neck too that I haven't been to yet.

Aubade - if you're looking for vegetable starters in the
Freehold/Colt's Neck area, you should definitely try
Morganville Flower Farm on northbound Rte. 79 (about 3 miles north of the Rte. 520 intersection). Also, on
Rte. 524 (Elton-Adelphia Road), between Freehold and Farmingdale, check out Patterson's Family Farm, an authentic family farm, with really lovely folks.

Thanks. We are definitely going to check out Cross Country Nursery - my husband is a hot pepper freak, when I showed him that link he was in heaven! :-)

I'm also trying to find edible marigolds, ie. tangerine or lemon gem. (I need quite a few plants and don't have room to start them inside) I already called Brock Farms and they said they don't have them, so I will definitely check out these other suggestions.

aubade, you may want to make a day-trip (or call or e-mail) to Well-Sweep Herb Farm, 205 Mount Bethel Rd, Port Murray, NJ. They show both marigold varieties (and 5 more) that you mention in their 2009 catalog (which you can download from their website).

I wonder if their quality has improved under new mgmt.
I haven't bought vegies there, as I am new to vegie gardening, and I will give them a try, but over the past 8 years buying the occasional flower or herb, I have found their quality to be spotty.
Not terrible, just not consistently good.
there is also How Garden Center - a little further down How Lane from Livingston Nursery - heading toward Rt 27, same side of the street.

Check out Brushill Nursery, 592 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction, NJ is year. They also have certified mushroom compost in bags and bulk. All their vegetables are grown locally. Many interesting varieties, including Asian vegetables.

I have grown vegetables for about for many years and the best sugestion I can give you is buy seeds on line and grow your own. There are many good seed companies that specialize in heirloom plants. Then collect the seeds from your your plants to use the following years. By using the best seeds from your garden you will develop a seed bank of seeds that will become best for your micro climate. Also, make your own fertilizer using egg shells, bone meal, blood meal, etc. Also, make a compost pile and get coffee grinds from a Wawa or other coffee place to spread on your garden during the winter. Earthworms love coffee grinds.
