Anyone with Grand Canyon?

I bought Grand Canyon last spring. It looked the same that first summer, not really any bigger. This year it looks like anything but the Grand Canyon. One larger leaf came out and about 5 small stunted scrawny looking leaves also came out. It gets approx 4 hours of morning sun, but is shaded the rest of the day. I moved it further forward in the bed, and made sure it wasn't planted too deep, still looks bad.

Anyone have experience with this particular hosta? I would appreciate hearing your experience and location of plant. Possibly it needs more sun?

I bought one last year also, and mine has not grown. It's still only three leaves. I just moved it this week thinking it was location, which it still might be.

I just looked it up. It's a cross between Montana and S&S, so it needs alot of sun to flourish. The NE side of your house would be an ultimate spot for it, even if it would get full sun for awhile. Water it and watch it grow!
.....Now I am wondering if I bought it last year LOL!

I was born and raised in Flagstaff, AZ, so I particularly enjoy seeing these photos of my backyard! ;-) IDs: Fouquieria splendens (Ocotillo) Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa (Buckhorn Cholla, but this one is difficult since cholla are so variable) Ferocactus cylindraceus (my best guess as to your barrel) Yucca brevifolia (this seems a bit out of its range, unless your tour took you more near Lake Powell than up in the Grand Canyon, it may be a planted specimen)

Cathy, if you want a feeling of what a massive piece of sculpture it is, you won't get close to Crazy Horse, they are still working and so there is a "demolition zone". You can get much closer to the faces at Rushmore. Plus, Rushmore is a National Park and Crazy Horse is administered by a non-profit organization. That means no government money goes into Crazy Horse, so it's going slowly. Crazy Horse was a hero to his people, caring for the ill and elderly, protecting the children, and he died from a knife in his back, ostensibly from a soldier at the fort where he went to talk about treaties between the U.S. Government and the Lakota. The faces on Rushmore, though, were national figures, not simply ethnic ones. Each has its own history and significance. Rushmore, though, has historical significance for everyone, not just the Native Americans. And walking down that walk of flags, with a flag from every state, is very cool! Annie

I have been on both sides with my youngest daughter, and only on the south with my older daughter. My older daughter is very afraid of heights, and this was just not for her. With the younger one, it was two separate bicycling trips, a long time ago. I was in AWE, on both sides. Lori and I hiked down on the south side, but were on a longer bike ride on the north, and didn't hike down. GREAT pictures Nita! Moni

If you really want to experience the Grand Canyon you could do what a coworker did. He started on one side, ran down, then ran up the other side. Once there, the group thought maybe doing the reverse as they intended might not be a great idea since one of the guys had a cold. They found someone willing to give them a ride back to the other side but then discovered it would be a four hour drive. So they decided they might as well run back. So they did. They had started the trip at about 1 AM (lighting their way with head lamps) and figured on 13 hours. Took more like 16. Actually, I do not recommend this at all! lol Among other reasons - the park rangers, apparently, really frown on this running down and up and down and up adventure.

montanas are [as a greneral rule] ..... ssoooooooooo ssssllllloooooowwwwwwww ...

i dont know about 'watching' it grow .. but some faith is requisite ...

SS though much faster .. is still a giant ... more faith needed ...

was it potted or a division???? always consider.. the plant above can be no bigger than the root mass below ....

Grand Canyon was not too impressive when I purchased it. But over the years it has developed nicely...not fast...but steady...and this year it is gorgeous.

It has been slow for me, but it's a really interesting plant! It handles a lot of sun here.

Just taken photo of Grand Canyon. In its fourth year, it has leaped tremedously to 15 eyes (from 6 eyes last year). I also note that the piecrust effect of the leaves is now more pronounced. I have high hope for this hosta which should eventually reach a giant size.

Thank you everyone for your replies! Makes me have hope.

I have both Montana and S&S. Montana is soooooooooooooo slow, you are soooooooooooooooooooo correct! S&S on the other hand is HUUUUUUGGGEE!
I will hold out hope that GC with straighten out over time!

I got my Grand Canyon in the summer of 2004. It grew slowly but steadly. Last year was a big jump for it. The tree that shaded it was injured so Grand Canyon had to take lots of hard sun. I thought it took it better than the S & S in that area did. . .kind of shocked me. . lol
