Cork - Gillian has really heavy blossoms. Lyon's Plum Pudding as I remember has short bloomstalks. If you very carefully redirect buds from under the leaves before they open, it can be done - but you probably break some of them. Very double blossoms are so heavy - the bloomstalks are not that strong to keep something like Gillian upright. Single blossoms usually behave better. If you think - the oldies quite often have weak bloomstalks and modern hybrids are selected to have stronger ones. So most of it is genetics, but I think if you have high light, the bloomstalks become shorter and blossoms hide more. I.

Nat4b I top dress with compost, bagged manure, bagged topsoil, and bagged garden soil, that I mix up. In the past I had top dressed with mushroom compost, but found it had too many pieces of gravel in it, don't know what that was all about. I make my own compost to use. Kay, Yes, Lava Flow is a beautiful daylily, and I had to laugh because the photo on Frank Smith's website, is actually terrible, can you believe it!!! I would have never bought it from his photo. Needed Rita's photo, to know I wanted it!! Also, Jean, I think it was your photo of Incendiary, that had me searching for that one! Celeste, you will not be disappointed, I had also bought Incendiary from Maryott. Iris, heuchera, dianthus, iceland poppy, johnny jump ups, my little species daffodil...I 'll have to look up the variety, I can't praise it enough! A lemony scent, more than one flower to a bulb, thin leaves...but the scent....ohhhhhh momma! Heavenly, and it is nice to have a late daff. Some of my late grape hyacinths are hanging on, several of the viburnams, the Dwarf red buckeye is getting ready to pop as is the Alleghany viburnam and I can see that combo is going to be great--thanks to Viburnamman who suggested it. The Choinanthes virginicus is on the cusp of blooming....that will be fun as I haven't had it bloom before, my variagated lilac is on the way out, but Miss Kim and a couple of others are just starting.....ahhhh spring! Too bad my back and hands hurt so much from trying to deal with the sod and clay!!!!!

Fennelfrl -- I followed the link to your website and you are HILARIOUS! I too must have a Miss Kim. I was unsure since I had only read about on the net. But after your personal recommendation...SOLD! :-) I can't wait for those heavenly blooms! BTW, how is yours doing so far? Can you tell me anything about the growth rate? Thanks for anything you can offer! So while on your website, I read some of the other posts you had. The one called, "The yews must die" was particularly interesting. We just moved into a house (new construction) which has NO landscaping. I had the whole yard figured out except for my foundation beds. I did the same thing as you -- walked the neighborhood in search of inspiration. All I saw were yews, boxwoods and others of the sort. I should have bought a barf bag with me! I can't take those things anymore! When I asked for advice, I heard the same thing about "winter interest". Blah blah blah. Considering how cold and nasty winters get out here, I'm not going to be outside long enough to even be looking at the darn things! Anyhow, needless to say, I decided against the yews, etc. I will be doing some small hydrangeas surrounded by other perennials such as hostas and tall astibles which bloom at various times over the summer. I'll also have some fringed bleeding heart and some type of coral bells. I like that WAY better! Thanks so much for yewr support!
