Josh- What I think you're referring to as horsetail bamboo is neither a fern nor a bamboo. It's an incredibly invasive weed -- much more of a problem than any bamboo -- and the only advice I'd give you is to not plant it. I think you would regret it soon, and so will your neighbors. In fact, there are many localities where there are strict state or local prohibitions against planting this. You may want to read the info in the link below...and then consider planting something less noxious. My own experience with horsetail is that you don't need to worry about spacing: it's so prolific that it will grow into a mass very quickly. I've got an infestation of it on part of my property (believe me, I didn't plant it), and I've spent countless hours trying to get rid of two large patches. It's a continual battle to keep it at bay. I remember growing up and loving to play in my Mom's garden in Monterey - filled with horsetail reeds, flowering trees, water fountains and plants of all kinds. The reeds spread quickly, but always stayed in that area. Out of nostalgia, I planted some in a 1/2 wine barrel about 2 months ago and it's double the size. It's on concrete, so I'm not too worried about it, but I have read that you have to trim the little seed pods off or they'll release spores everywhere. They're cool looking plants, though.

Horsetail stands out among other plants due to its perfumes rare origin and little similarity to most of the inhabitants of flora kingdom. First, handbags it is the descendant of the plants thriving in Paleozoic era (more than 400 million years ago), and second, it belongs to the Equisetum genus, the only existing in Equisetaceae family known for vascular plants propagated by sunglasses spores.
