This forum is for native plants of North America. Nandina is not a native plant and in some places can actually be a bit of a nuisance.

You might try another forum such as Shrubs or Texas Gardening.

While esh is right, it is not a native to North America, I will at least offer to help as that it what you are looking for.

We had a nadina plant that was about 2' to 3' high last year. I dug it up, put it in a wide and deep pot and over wintered it in a holding bed, pot sunk into the dirt like it was planted.

Well, the nadina did not come back this spring!. But something told me to wait and not throw it out or compost it.

Well, last weekend, it started putting out new growth!. I trimmed the plant down to the new growth, and we still have our nadina.

These babies are tough, yours should be okay. Give it time before you throw in the towel.

That being said, if you are in an area in which the nadina plant can be invasive, plant it in a large container, such as the thick heavy duty plastic nursey pots that trees are sold in. Then, sink the pot into the ground and keep the lip of the pot about two inches above the soil line and mulch around it. That should hopefully help keep it contained. That has worked for me, but I am in Pennsylvania, so that is comparing apples to oranges. What might work here, may not work there!

But like esh said, it is not a native, check over on the Shrub or Texas forums to see if anyone in your area can give better advice.

Planting nandina in a pot will not stop it from being invasive. The birds carry the berries and it is these berries that are springing up in the parks of Texas where I live. The Mayor of Austin has asked the nurseries not to carry it because of this problem. Most have complied. Same with ligustrum and others.
