Plant ID, dark red tall stalk

The flowers are arranged up the top half of the stalk, the flowers themselves resemble carnations.

These are some really dark red flowers and the leaves are broad with multiple veins. Slightly heart shaped.

Multiple stalks, but not sure if they are connected or not.

I just moved into this house & found this flower in the bed next to the front steps, so I have no idea what it is. This is my first place to start.

If you can post a picture on the Name That Plant forum, I think you'd get an id. You can attach a picture that is up to 60K in size (the bigger the better), or you can post a picture on a hosting site (like Photobucket) and just give a link to that picture.

Actually, that does sound like pokeweed, if the berries turn dark purple, almost black, then that's probably what you got. If they stain your hand a magenta pink color, that's pokeweed berries. You should check out the book by Euell Gibbons "Stalking the wild asparagus", he's got a few recipes for poke in the early stages of its growth.

Elaine, No that is a red Amaranth in a friend's garden that gets really big. There are celosias that get really big. I got seeds from a trader over the winter for one that looks like Pink Flamingo on steroids. Most of the big celosias are old heirlooms. Appears to be polk but need a picture of the leaves. Makes a, to me, tree like structure when mature. However birds like the fruit and will spread the seeds. One of our native plants.
