Where to find Witch Hazel plants in GA

My wife and I both use witch hazel a good bit for minor irritations, etc. I actually use it as an aftershave. I thought I might try to plant a Witch Hazel shrub or two and try making our own concoction from the leaves/bark rather than buying it. Any idea where I might find it in the eastern metro-Atlanta/Snellville area? None of the local nurseries seem to have it and I haven't had much luck finding it online. I'd much rather buy it locally anyway. Is it a seasonal thing that I'll have more luck finding in the fall?

We had some for sale at the Georgia Native Plant Society sale two weeks ago in Marietta. Native, local plants, fresh from a construction rescue.

I have one that had to be cut down at the rescue due to construction damage. It's not pretty right now so I didn't bring it to the sale. But it is vigorously sprouting back. I can bring it to our May meeting at Atlanta Botanical Garden on May 14 if you want to buy it from the plant society (we'll be selling some other plants too).

A very unfortunate loss to be sure. Wind tolerance though would really not have anything to do with a split in the main trunk as extensive and devastating as this one. Such splits usually result from snow load, an unnoticed flaw in the trunk or branch structure, possibly torrential rain, The pressure exerted by wind is almost always horizontal unless you experienced a rare and very powerful downdraft. I would speak to the people at Rarefind and see what they say. The fact that the witchhazel was shipped also would seem to have nothing to do with what happened. Don't give up on all mail order because of this experience.

I have wild red currant, Rovada domestic red currant, Magnus black currant, red gooseberry, no name, yellow sweet gooseberry, no name, and Josta, tiny cuttings only as they are first year bushes. I suspect they have not had their chilling requirements yet, so cuttings or small bushes would probably be better in early spring. Where did your sweet chestnuts come from? I am looking for a seed source I don't have to shuffle the genetics a bit. Jocelyn

Ooh! Thanks for the tips. I've definitely got to figure out where to plant them. I see the Polly Hill Arboretum link runktrun provided above says the Ozarks one enjoys alkaline soil- ours is very neutral which is nice, but should I put lime down twice a year for this plant? While my plants are pretty small, I made a note to prune the molis for best results. Diggingthedirt: I like the two ideas of planting in front of evergreens and in a location where they can be backlit. 'Gardening by the Yard' on HGTV had a whole show on lighting up your garden with plants that catch the light. What a concept! I may have a great spot that is the best of both worlds, near an evergreen with back lighting from the south west, when the sun goes down. I also saw that the zone 6 'Wisley Supreme' might drop its flowers in a harsh late winter. Some places on my property are zone 5, and because of wind breaks etc., some areas are zone 6, so I will have to consider this carefully.

Did you ever find the information you were seeking on witch hazels? If you're still searching, try the web site for Rare Find Nursery in Jackson, NJ; link is below. I've always found their web site to be a good source of information. Just enter hamamelis in the search box in the upper right corner of the home page and you'll find information and photos on many different witch hazels. This nursery is about 20 minutes south of me; it's not far from Six Flags/Great Adventure ... but I'd much rather spend the day at Rare Find ;-) and is one of my favorite nurseries because they're serious, not glitzy, about what they do.
