Trilliums - peculiar behavior

We have a woodlot backyard and there are naturally occuring red and white trilliums in amongst the trout lilies, blue cohash and jacks.

We were shocked this year after having mostly white trilliums bloom last year, to have almost exclusively red trilliums in much more abudance. Last year in one small patch we had maybe a dozen white trilliums and only one red one. Now this year in the exact same spot we have OVER A DOZEN RED and only one white. What has caused this? Do trilliums only bloom once in a while? Do they bloom differently according to the weather (it's been seriously cold this sping with late snowfalls and tons of hail...we've had well over seven bouts of hail this week alone) They haven't been affected at all by the hail mostly because they are under mature maples and beech but the extreme change in bloom colours is odd to say the least. Are the white ones just not blooming this year? Do trillums bloom every year? Or is this just the year for the red trilliums to do their thing and not the white ones?
