I use the computer based one (also have battery operated one) and love it. I keep a spreadsheet of my hostas and am able to link to the spreadsheet and select ones I want to print. It is periodically on sale at Costco on-line for around $40 I think, else $70 regularly. Model PT-2430PC

I have the P-Touch model # PT-1280. It was not expensive at all. It is probably not as advanced as the one Paul mentioned, but I find that it does the job very well for the money I paid for it!

It is the tape that costs a lot. Just some advice, do not buy your tape at Staples! It is over $20 a roll! My P-Touch on sale was only $29! LOL!

I would suggest doing a search on Amazon, and buying your tape there. You can get 2 times as much tape for the same price. If you need a specific place, let me know, I can look up who I bought mine from last. It was the cheapest of them all.

Also, I get the special Weather-Resistant tape. Although their regular tape is resistant too, I think it is worth the extra few bucks to have the extra protection!

I actually have fun making labels with my P-Touch! LOL! It is a nice, relaxing job to do.

So, I will try hers out and then buy one for myself. I've got more than 250 labels that need to be printed, so the computer based one would probably be really really a good idea....

I remember reading a post that said when you make the labels to type as many as you can that will fit into the memory of the label maker. Then, print out one long label and cut them yourselves, really saves on the tape. I also set my margin to be very narrow, but the lead is still longer than the end and will waste if you print each individually.

I use the PT1750 with the full keyboard And don't worry about arthritic thumbs. I only use fingers,as the keys are so small. It works graet,and I also use the UV protected tape. Phil

I have a refurbished PT 1010, bought from Ptouch Direct for less than $10. Power adapter (no batteries) was $20. Why pay more and why buy batteries?

Ebay has lots of refurbished PTouch. That's where I got mine. I don't think the model matters. I do like the idea of the one that attaches to the computer. I thought I'd use mine more outside, but it turns out I sit and make labels while watching TV.

I go thru a lot of labels cuz I make a long one that goes front & back I put the name of the place I got the plant and the year on the back of the label. It's common that people will ask "how long has that one been there?" or "do you know where you got that one?"

I bought mine,years ago,I actually forgot I have it, til now,Thanks to this posting. ( getting old, or, as my hubby would say, I have slept since I bought it,,teehee )I do not have any paper work,( slept since...... ) so I am not sure who I have, there are no numbers, but it looks like a large hand held calculator,says Dymo,with a little icon on the bottom that reads,LETRA-TAG-QX50,is this what you all have?How will I know what labels to order?

Having read and re-read all of your posts and having looked at various models online, I think I am going to check my sisters over the weekend, but will probably shell out for one I can attach to my laptop. This keyboard works perfectly and I think I could manage to sit here an print out some of the 300 or so labels that I will need.

And since Gisela mentioned printing out lots at a time, I'm also thinking the built-in cutter might be overkill and not cost effective?

Right now I think the 1230PC might fit the bill perfectly.

I have a PTouch 2700. I tried a less expensive model, but I wanted one a little easier to use. Mine is hooked up to my computer and I use the computer keyboard to print. (alot easier to use than the small keyboard on the PTouch.) I have labeled all my hanging files, all my binders, and all my plants, in fact I went a little over board, it was so easy to use. I can print horizontaly(sp) or vertically (again sp) I order my tapes online from PTouch Direct. I use 1" and 1/2 " tape black on clear #TZ151. For the 1", it's $17.99. I order 2 at a time to save on postage. If anyone knows of a better price, please let me know. I hope this all makes sense, I tried to give as much info as I could.

One of my tasks this winter is to make labels for the plants I bought in the last two years. I had been using Avery Weatherproof labels, but after a few years they're starting to come off. I'd like something a bit more permanent. It sounds like the P-touch labels may work.

I had been printing from my computer (now a Mac) and would like to continue to do that. I'm thinking about getting the P-Touch 2730 and wondering if anyone is using that. Also, trying to decide between the TZ tape which I think is what people are referring to as UV protected. There is also an "Extra Strength" tape - wondering if anyone has tried that. It says it has "up to twice the adhesive strength than regular p-touch tapes." I want them to stay on my zinc markers, but not to be too hard to handle.

eir2005 - I've been using a p-touch(2430pc) that runs connected to my computer and wouldn't go back. I have a list of my hostas on a spreadsheet and can link and print using this listing. I would save your money regarding the extra strength tape - regular tz(e) work great.

btw, if you have a costco membership 2730 is $59.99 currently on-line and TZE131 (black on clear 1/2" tapes) are$9.60 - both include shipping and handling.

i have used tz-131 for 15 years.. and that tape is still good on many of the very old label plates ...

the label plates are mangled to heck.. but the 131 is fine .. lol ..

no need for extra strength if there is any significant cost difference ...

I just ordered the 2730 through Costco. I was thinking I'd want the 3/4" tape - like to put date and place bought on the label too. But the price for the 1/2" is much better than I've found for the 3/4" and I would think I could fit all the info on it. Won't go for the extra strength - thanks Paul and Ken.

ejr2005 - I think Melissa puts some info on back of the marker like date and where purchased. Maybe she'll chime in.
