For those who use a Brother P-Touch labeler

I wanted to share with you about a GREAT source for label cartridges!

I use a metal label from eonindustries.com. On that, I use a clear label tape with black writing from my Brother P-Touch Labeler. It's a very clean look. But I hated spending $17.99 1/2" label cartridges.... I didn't even bother pricing the wider ones at a local office supply stores!

So, when I ran out over the weekend, I was SOOO not looking forward to spending that kinda money. Hey, that's the price of a nice hosta!

So I went online and found an online retailer who had the 3/4" tape for 4.95 plus 4.65 shipping! That's less than half of what I could get at the office supply store! AND they offer discount shipping for multiple purchases.

So, for $27.98, I got 4 label tapes...including shipping. 3 at 3/4" and one at 1". Odd thing is that their 1/2" ones were more expensive!

Oh, I ordered them on Sunday and got them today! Standard shipping!

Anywho, it's an Amazon seller, called Marsales. I hope, if you use these tapes, you find them to be as great a retailer as I have found them to be!

thanks for the tip... I use the 1" on the Eon markers... used to use the black on white background, but have switched to the black on clear like you use... I like it better even if it is slightly harder to read for my old eyes... still very clear and unobtrusive...

I bought one of these a while back and with the outdoor tape the labels have held up very well. Far better than any other option I've tried. Sometimes when DH uses it, the spelling gets interesting. He speaks fluent German, how can he misspell Kanegem???

I suggest you consider these factors. You will get your investment out of your labeller if it's simple and straightforward to use. 1) PC connectible. Essential. The user interface on the keyboard labelers is lousy to inexcusable. 2) Width of tape the unit accepts. A 1/2 inch tape is virtually useless for two lines of print because the print becomes microscopic. You didn't mention what you'll put these labels on. You may be thinking that you'll just run two tapes for two lines of print. You're better off buying a unit that accepts wider tape, as it will look neater and use less tape. Those tapes ain't cheap, at $12 each. 3) Buy an AC adapter. It avoids wasting money and resources on batteries. Brothers makes a PC-connectible labelers that are just the printer, none of the keyboard stuff. I think this is smart, as I find the keyboard useless if you don't use the machine every day. The 1230PC you mention is one of those models. My issue with this model is that it only runs tapes up to 1/2 inch wide, whereas the next model, Ptouch 2430PC, runs tapes up to 3/4 inch. I found that once I label a rose, I want more than one line of print. I list name and class and then hybridizer and date on the second line. That makes the print very very small on a 1/2 wide tape. The Ptouch 2430PC is what I'd buy if I were replacing mine. Count me among those very happy with the Ptouch label makers. My model 2600 is discontinued. The software interface works with my Mac, so I use my computer the set up and print the labels. This is very helpful, as the Brother's keyboard is too complicated and counter-intuitive to make any sense at all if you don't use it daily. OTOH, with the pc connection, I find I use the labeler much more. I use it to label files and to label those pesky little items that seem to disappear when you have big kids, like your cell phone chargers. I also use it to label adapters, as I find they become separated from their device and all look alike. That new unit, Ptouch 1880 looks comparable to mine, except it doesn't mention being able to connect to your computer. It's worth the money to have the computer interface. The Ptouch 2100 or 2110 seems like my unit: connect to the pc with USB cord, comes with a case and an AC adapter, and print on both sizes tape, 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. HTH.

Great! Got some. I have a nice P-Touch label maker so now I just need a source for some plant markers. I'd prefer a bronze or silvery color 10-14" long and at a 45 degree angle so they can be easily read. I'm looking for about 100 for starters. Does anyone have a source or link they'd like to recommend? Thanks a lot Ken!

Jim, Thanks again for the Costco P-Touch tip. I ordered on Tuesday and it's already on its way to me. What a great deal! I will bookmark these sources for future tape needs.

Thanks so much! I use my Brother P Touch to make labels for my hostas and other plants, then I put them onto metal markers. I ran out of tape a few months ago so I went to Staples and had to pay almost $20 for the 1/2" ! That is half the price of the darn labeler! I will definitely check this out.
While on the subject, I am running low on my metal markers, the silver/colored, Zinc ones. Does anyone have a good source for them at a cheap price?

I would suggest comparing PawPaw Everlast lables. American made- free shipping! A very good company to work with!

every time this comes up, the majority of recommendations are for Eon or Paw-Paw... people are happy with the quality and service from both companies - usually boils down to the quantity/price combo that comes out best for you...

I ordered the Paw-Paw 12" 2-prong rose stakes. The box arrived this morning (2 days from order) and I am very very very pleased with them. No more craft sticks for the chippers and squirrels to play with in my gardens.

Now I just need to dig out perennial thugs, improve the soil, plant my hauls from Funkie and Savory's, do some dividing, and get those labels made. It will be a busy late summer/ fall!

I have used both the Eon and PawPaw labels.

In my honest opinion I'd have to say the Eon labels are slightly higher quality - the rounded corners are a plus - they seem a little stronger.

However, the PawPaw labels are significantly cheaper, especially as they offer free shipping, and the quality is not that much lower.

Just my two cents worth!

Are you comparing the same types of label?
I use the "Rose Label" from Eon and would order the Cap Style from Paw Paw. Have you used either of these?

I mean, you referenced "rounded corners" from Eon... is that on a different type of label or the types I referenced?

Thanks guys for the label info! I think I am going to go with the PawPaw Cap Labels. They look exactly like what I have now.

Melissa, I do have a question. The place you recommend for the Brother tape, do they sell the Black Letter on Clear tape? I only saw black on white tape.
I wish I would have known this before I bought my $20 refill at Staples last month! LOL!

I hope this posts soon enough to help thisismelissa and others. Spend the extra couple of dollars and buy the PawPaw Rose Labels. Buy more than you think you need.
The cap labels will become a nightmare- they slip off after a season and fly away, and are hard to reattach so that they don't slip off again.
Rose labels are also tilted, and they stay on better. Black on clear tape is much more subtle, but very readable-use a large font. I am in the process of replacing over 300 Cap labels/ black on white tape with Rose labels / black on clear. After a few winters looking out the window at what looked like a spotty hosta graveyard, I HAD to replace them.
If you have a hosta fatality and want to reuse a label, the tape peels off pretty easily for the first year or so in the ground. PawPaw and P-Touch rule!

Melissa - I have used the Eon Nursery markers E-10 and the Paw Paw mini labels "M" - they are equivalent in size. The rounded corners I mentioned are literally the corners of the piece of metal the labels are made of. Eon smooths them out using a curved shape, Paw Paw leaves them square - somehow in my clutziness I manage to scratch myself on the square corners! Just don't ask me how I do it!

I like the way each of them has the slightly tilted placement of the label, makes them easier to read when standing above them.

My choice was dictated by two things: my favourite, and only hosta nursery I know of in CT, O'Brien's, uses that style; and I didn't think it was worth spending extra on swinging or cap style markers. Would rather spend the money on hostas! But I did want a good permanent name label.

So I swear by the P-Touch labeller and either of the two markers from Eon or Paw Paw.

Is anyone aware of any problems at Eon? We have two orders, one placed in June. I've emailed and called several times.
No answer to emails and voice mail on phone, can't get an answer.
