My first M Gardener Plant Sale

Hey everybody, I went to a plant sale (my first) and boughtjack in the pulpit, cinnamon fern, and one other plant whose name has gone clear out of my head. They had Mayapple (didn't buy this because I'm afraid it will be too aggressive for me),

The fringed bleeding heart was already gone, and I inquired about columbine but there was none. Someone told me where I could go to harvest some on a roadside. Ethical or not? I feel guilty contemplating that possiblity, but they are wild flowers, right? What is the communities thoughts on that?

Very excited about the plant sale,and can't wait til the next one!

Also picked up 2 gorgeous viburnums yesterday, hard to find in my area, hopefully worth the wait, cardinal and red regal.

Legally the land belongs to someone. Even on the roadside, where an easement exists to some local govt., there is still an owner. So, legally, you would be trespassing if nothing else. Morally and ethically, you will have to decide if you know that the plants will be mowed down or even removed if the road is widened or the hwy. dept. decides to clean ditches, etc. When aware of one of the previous conditions, I have been known to "rescue" some plants, but I try to get permission. It would be better, in my opinion, for you to ask whoever lives around that site if you can dig a few columbines...or whatever plant is growing there that you want. Most people are happy to share. Developers, however, are another matter. BTW, most native plant organizations are opposed to taking from the wild UNLESS the site will be destroyed.

Hi, the road that the woman was directing me to is described as an intra-county state highway stretching across three-quarters of the County. There are no homes along this route. If I were to try to get permission where would i start? I think I will probably just find a nursery and buy some.

Sylvia's right about topsoil- don't bother, it probably came from some construction site around the corner from you and is the same as what you have - or worse! Clay is very fertile, it just needs organic matter mixed in so it doesn't turn into grease when it's wet and bricks when it's dry. Get a load of compost instead and mix it in with your clay. You say "Not sure if I got enough." I have probably 4,000 bulbs on my 135 x 65' property and I am saying the same thing every fall! What you have is a great start and they will be beautiful. I'm not in your zone so it could be different there, but here most of the bulbs you mentioned are not spring bulbs, they bloom in the summer. Poppies bloom in the early summer and then the whole plant disappears when the heat hits. So it may not be the best combination unless you leave room for the poppies when you plant the bulbs, and then plan for annuals or something once the poppies fade. Good luck!

With the heavy rain in my area, I am missing some of my beans. Actualy, almost all of them. I only have 3 that actually popped up.The rest are missing. I am Disabled in a wheelchair and can no longer afford anymore bean seeds. I am wondering if I should look throughout the garden in other places in see if the beans have maybe spread? I am just not sure where they went.

Sorry I was so negative, but SOMEBODY owns that land. I guess you could ask someone working on any part of the road for permission. They will ok it, even if it isn't their land, and we will all feel better. I did that one time when they were grading the road...asked the operator of one of the big machines...and got the Gray's lilies that were going to be swept aside. Technically, I am sure they had no right to give permission, but it made me feel better...and I got the plants! And, I am glad you liked the MG sale. I belong to the local group, and we have a very good sale every spring. I try to put some natives in it.
