Native vine seedlings

Hi guys, I tried posting this on the Vines forum, but that forum is so slow and no responses, and thought I might get more responses here.

This year I have winter-sown 5 types of native vines -

Aristolochia tomentosa - Dutchman's pipevine

Campsis radicans - Trumpet vine

Clematis virginiana - native Clematis

Cynanchum laeve - Milkweed vine

Passiflora incarnata - Maypops

All but the Passiflora have sprouted and seem to be doing well. My questions to anyone who has grown these from seed, what can I expect from these vine seedlings in the first year? Will they grow a lot or a little? I am wondering if I should prepare trellises and plant them out this Spring or pot them and baby them for awhile, then plant them out next Fall or Spring.

Any other insights about their cultivation would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I had several of each species, I would plant out some in the ground as soon as they are ready to move, or at least sometime this spring or early summer, and keep some reserves in pots. I think they'll grow faster in the ground and if they are in their permanent location you'll avoid future transplant shock. However, in the ground animals and insects may get to them, so a few in a pot as insurance are a good idea, I think. Make sure to build good trellises especially for the trumpet creeper, which is a long-lived, large vine that requires a sturdy support. I recommend at a minimum a 4x4 post sticking 5 or 6 feet out of the ground with 2 or 3 feet in the ground (start with an 8 ft post). The trumpet creeper can climb a flat surface, while the others need something to twine around, such as a fence, bush, strings, etc.

Terrene - I grew the Clematis virginiana from seed several years ago. I kept them in pots the first year because they were still very tiny. The second year I planted them in the ground and they grew quite a few stems, but this year they are really taking off. I would keep the seedlings in pots for the first year - they are quite delicate and prone to stem breakage. Good luck!

I'm not aware of any major success in cross Genera grafting. Quince and pear work. Almost any cactus species can be grafted onto another cactus species. But as a rule, I don't think it works. Honestly, if what you proposed with Wisteria, for example, worked, it would probably already be done by the nursery trade. However, that doesn't mean you couldn't try. The species definitely need to be closely related, you won't be able to graft things from completely different families together. You wouldn't be out much except a little time and a minimal amount of supplies, and you would learn more about grafting and practice your technique.

What I also fine weird is that on each of these, there are these things neaar the bottom of the stem. Refer to the 1st picture. It's not in great focus, but that thing near the bottom, it's sticking upwards...It's like some kind of stipule, or leaf...doesn't look like a tendril or root to me - it's green.... So...it's like...uhh, what is that thing, why is it so far at the bottom of the stem, and why isn't anything growing from it? Weird. I should also mention that these had white fibrous roots, not dark woody ones or anything like that.

Hardenbergia certainly wont and I don't think the Pandorea will either, though I've not planted that, it might need keeping an eye on. As you're in Melbourne I'd try a few Clematis: Aristata (old man's beard) and C. Glycinoides are Aussie natives. Neither produce flowers as dramatic as the non-native varieties but worth a place in the garden. Clematis do need special treatment however, but are certainly not difficult and there are many sites covering their varieties and cultivation. It's just in the genetics. The plant must twine to climb so uneven growth on the vine makes that happen. It's 'programmed' to shorten cells on one side. I came across this many years ago trying to get a sure method of telling the difference between Dioscorea bulbifera and Dioscorea transversa. Bulbifera goes clockwise whilst transversa goes anticlockwise. Through observation around the same time I found that most vines seemed to go clockwise. This was on a local level, in my part of the country. I guessed that would also hold for the rest of the world. The coriolus effect only works on huge bodies of fluid, such as the oceans and the atmosphere. It has no effect on a micro level. The old stories of water draining from baths or sinks going in one direction are a myth. Those amounts of water are far too small to be even slightly affected. And plants are affected even less.
