Why are they so different

I bought these plants this spring. They were labeled wide brim. (They are more yellow than they appear in this photo.) I was curious that they seem so differnt. Some have a lot more green than others. They're in a planter box, same soil, same water. #1 is small, about 1/2 the size of #4. #3 seened to have stalled out (hasn't put on a new leaf since originally leafing out). #4 looks different and is in bud, while the others aren't. #5 is about 3 weeks behind the others as I got a mislabeled plant and had to replace it. Is this just the difference from one plant to the next or do I have more mislabeled plants?

By the way, something is eating it where it touches the soil. What is it? (I only grown in pots and have not seen this before.)
