Native Plant Appreciation Week - Washington, May 1-7

Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire has proclaimed May 1st through May 7th, 2005 as Native Plant Appreciation Week in Washington.

Cities and Counties are joining the Governor in proclaiming Native Plant Appreciation Week, including Bainbridge Island, Bellevue, Chehalis, Colville, Deer Park, Edmonds, Everett, Grandview, Jefferson County, Kent, Kitsap County, Lakewood, Lynnwood, Olympia, Monroe, Port Townsend, Poulsbo, Redmond, Renton, Richland, SeaTac, Seattle, Shelton, Shoreline, Snohomish, Spokane Valley, Sumner, Tumwater, University Place, Vancouver, Woodinville, and Yakima.

This week is intended to be a celebration of the amazing diversity of WashingtonÂs over 3000 native plant species that range from desert plants to rain forest species and of the native plant ecosystems that are so important to sustaining the quality of WashingtonÂs environment.

Actitivies of the week include

ï· Educational programs and lectures

ï· Field tours of native plant sites and gardens

ï· Visits to natural areas

ï· Volunteer opportunities for restoration projects or weed pulls

ï· Teacher or other training programs

ï· News releases or website information about your activities

ï· Distribution of educational brochures

ï· Joint activities with other participating groups
