Cat fur for rabbit repellent?
Comments (2)Hi linnea, I've not had your specific problem, but I do notice there is a PEST & DISEASES forum here on the gardenweb, if you've got the time to check it out there, there will be ideas for all sorts of pests besides bugs, like deer, burrowing animals and such. One poster said dried blood (I think she may have been talking blood meal?) worked, and another used the neighbors' dog hair. Another was to dump human urine at the entrance to their burrow, if you know where that is. Good Luck! Why must bunnies be so cute? (we do have the little bush bunnies around here, but not in my garden yet.) kioni...See MoreDo Rabbits Eat Hollyhocks?
Comments (17)I've been gardening for 13 years and this is my first year with a rabbit problem. They are driving me nuts. They've left my zebrina totally alone, but ate the hollyhock right next to it. Have eaten two clematises right to the ground, all my morning glories, delphiniums, phlox, roses, all my annual poppies, asters, scabiosa, and all my sunflowers. I have sprinkled cayenne pepper on a lot of plants (per directions from a friend who owns a nursery) and that has helped. Also bought a liquid fence type thing, but it has rained here every day for about 2 weeks so I haven't used it yet. My chocolate lab loves to chase them, but I worry about him chasing them into the street, and he also wrecked a cranesbill by chasing the rabbit right through it. Oh well....See MoreI Hate Squirrels :(
Comments (14)I noticed that squirrels never dug around the plants I had allowed to become a de facto rock garden in my gravel driveway. That gave me the idea of putting expanded shale, a lightweight gravel-like material used as a soil additive, as a sort of mulch on top of my containers. It's pretty easy to find in garden centers under one brand name or another. As long as I maintain a decent layer of the stuff, the squirrels stay out of my pots. Cayenne pepper works for garden beds when sprinkled heavily on the mulch when you have a new planting. I like to mix it with black pepper, because that is more aromatic and supposedly the scent of it is repellent, so it will ward off the squirrels before they even get to contacting the hot pepper. I buy both types of pepper in bulk, mix together and apply it with a shaker right down on the ground. Spraying as a liquid will not do it. It's admittedly a fair bit of work and it needs to be refreshed regularly, especially after watering or rain....See MoreRabbit Pruning Rose Bushes
Comments (15)Thanks for the support everyone. There are only about 4 places where the bunny can get into the yard as it's completely fenced. Those spots will be made rabbit proof very soon!!!! Back in my rabbit hunting days we only shot them with rifles, shooting from the hip, after they were 50 feet away. Not many escaped us, so if push comes to shove I think Mr. Rabbit is in trouble..... lol Now for those of you who are gearing up to read me out, I'm kidding, okay.... lol...... well........See Moreelisabeth_rose
