Fried Green Tomatoes and Guacomole Question

So.. I picked up couple Hostas labelled as Guacamole on a whim while grocery shopping.... but they certainly don't look like any of the guacamoles I've seen on here. No Margin... just plain pretty green.

Then I read about them reverting to Fried Green Tomatoes sometimes or mislabelling. If it does revert, do the flower colors revert too? Mine has pure white flowers but the leaves look like FGT.

You ask an intriguing question. Hmmm, had not thought about it....

Not sure if there is any change on the flowers, but they are both plantaginea family plants, and they are both fragrant.
I think if there happened to be any difference florally, it would be slight....but then I do not know for sure. It is just my opinion.

Guacamole can't revert to Fried Green Tomaotes, because it did not come from FGT (revert implies going back, sport implies going forward). It sported out of Fragrant Bouquet, so hypothetically it could revert to Fragrant Bouquet. It sported into FGT. So, it could be sporting into FGT. If your plant is all green (by that I mean all the leaves are the same), then it's probably a stress situation or mislabeled and not sporting at all. Also, my Guacamole did not show the nice edge until it matured some, so that may be an issue. You could see the edge, but you really had to look for it.

The photo is an example of what I'm talking about. This is a hosta I picked up that is probably Paul's Glory, It has a big sport (maybe two eyes) that is solid green. (I usually don't buy hosta that are this ugly, but this was a special situation.) The solid green part is a sport (usually Wheaton Blue for Paul's Glory). It's not the whole plant, but just an eye.

The plant should be gold with a blue green edge, but has been severely stressed. The uglies are a result of stress. It should be fine next year, but the blue part will probably still be there. It's the sport part.

At least that's the way I understand it.

My mess of green tomatoes are dried. I may try re-hydrating them tomorrow night for dinner to see what happens. :) I haven't tried drying potatoes yet, but it's on my to-do list, and I may try doing them both ways to see what works best for me. We have a couple winery's here so they may sell the sulfur. I bought a bushel of snap beans yesterday evening and dried half of them last night, and have the rest in the dehydrator now. They should be done by tomorrow sometime. BTW, I did blanch them. :) I also dried some salted zucchini chips Friday. I heard they are good to snack on, but we weren't too crazy about them. That must be an aquired taste. Lol. (I may try drying some cucumber chips just to see how they come out tho) Louster, when my friend freezes her squash she puts a layer on a cookie sheet and after they freeze she bags them up. That way they don't stick together, and she can just use what she needs at the time. She batters them before she deep fries them. I'm thinking that may be a good way to do the green tomatoes and I'm going to try some that way this year and see how they turn out. Or we could probably go ahead & batter them first and then freeze in a single layer on a cookie sheet. I'd say we'd need to leave the salt out until we cook them tho.

Gee, I should have picked up on this topic earlier! Re: Grandmas's cast iron - she had her egg skillet, about 6" diameter that she "oiled" with a chunk of bacon fat on a fork before each egg. She'd sometimes break an egg but none ever stuck to that skillet. As for seasoning and cleaning; the initial seasoning of a new or renewed piece is the most important. As mentioned earlier, you can cook ANYTHING in cast iron. Mom used to make the best pineapple upside down cake in her 10" skillet. My own method of cleaning after cooking anything in my cast iron skillet, is simply to pour some water into it the minute I've removed the contents, turn off the burner and shove it to the back of the stove until I'm doing the after meal clean-up. I dump the contents (NOT a large amount of oil, of course), give it a scrub with a sponge or scrubber as needed, rinse with very hot water, dry with a paper towel and give it a quick squirt of Pam or whatever. I LOVE my cast iron; an eight inch egg skillet, a 10 inch everything else skillet, a 12" flat griddle and a dutch oven. The 10" skillet was a wedding present, the griddle was my Mom's and the egg skillet and dutch oven were purchased at a thrift store. My BIL talked my DH out of the 18", 6" deep skillet we used for fish frys. Those were some fun times........ cora

I like the idea of canning. The whole point of saving the green ones is that I have too many tomatoes right now, and need to keep them awhile. I've stored green tomatoes in the fridge before for a few weeks, but I didn't know whether I was damaging their flavor/texture or not. No access to a basement, and I need them to keep as long as possible, so canning seems like the most viable option. Do they stay nice and firm with this method?

The darker green margin on Guacamole is sometimes hard to see. I suppose it depends on growing conditions. I wouldn't worry about it, especially if your plants are new this year. Plant them and see what you get. As with most hostas, it will start to look like its mature self in about three years. As for Guacamole reverting to Fried Green Tomatoes, it will take someone brighter than I to explain how that could happen. FGT is a sport of Guacamole. I suppose FGT might revert to Guacamole, but not the other way around. Guacamole is a sport of Fragrant Bouquet.
