Transplanting trout lilies

Hi,

I would like to know how well these transplant. I am hoping to trade some but won't if they don't transplant well.

If they do transplant OK, I will be looking for trades once they are done blooming.

Deeeeeep corms. Hard to know which ones will bloom reliably. They transplant fine though.

The corms are very deep, 6 to 10 inches deep. It is difficult to dig them while in bloom as you usually break the very thin stalk connecting the corm to the leaves which kills the plant.

Mark the location of dense clumps in your garden, wait until the leaves disappear. Then use a deep shovel to dig up the clump in one piece about 12inches deep. Carefully break up the soil and separate the corms for trading.

Will these be blooming sized corms with the 2 leaves attached? For every trout lily that blooms there are hundreds of one leaf plants, the vast majority of which are sterile and actually never will bloom. Per the link below: Young, sterile plants send up a single leaf and these often grow in dense colonies. is why I'm asking. I have oodles and oodles of these trout lilies. I have a bunch that are in a path and should be moved. I will trade multiples of these for different arisaemas. You tell me how many you think is appropriate for a trade. These will each be blooming sized corms with the 2 leaves attached and the bloom attached. Here in southern Ontario the dogtoothed violet aka trout lily grows wild. My backyard woodland plot is chocked full of them... literally a carpet of dogtoothed violet/trout lily and Blue Cohash. Last year we had a dense carpet of both (the Blue Cohash is taller and doesn't disturb the trout lilies. But we put a fence in in the summer and all the foot traffic from building the fence affected the cohash a LOT. This spring the trout lilies and the cohash are much more sparse and not the "carpet" we had in previous years but we are confident that with time and care to keep the kids out of the woodland area that it will come back. It's also been extremely cold this spring which seems to be having an effect as well...lots of plant green but not so much flowering going on. Barb s/w Ontario

Even growing from seed takes less than 8 years (6 years and even 5 at a push). Perhaps to get a really decent colony from a handful of transplants? Once the bulbs are of flowering size, depending on fertility and moisture, the colony should double in size every 2-3 years - a daughter bulb can take 3-4 years to reach blooming size- faster if you deadhead to stop energy going into seed. My longest wait was 7 years for martagons (although a percentage was in bloom after 5 years)...and often the first year after transplanting will be a non-blooming year even with mature bulbs. Trilliums were a long wait (and then they hated my soil and conditions).

Judy, you don't mean kills the plant, do you? I think you mean that you lose the foliage. The corm should be fine for the next year.

I find it best to dig them while they are first coming up - the link from foliage to corm is still relatively strong, it is only as the foliage ages that it weakens. But even when the foliage breaks off, I keep the corm and transplant it as intended.

Bottom line for me: if you get the corm, they transplant fine. I've seen some folks dig up a clump (on a rescue) and never even realize that they didn't get the corm. So I'm sure those folks think they don't transplant well!

If you break the stem before the leaves have had a chance to generate food for the corm, the corm will be weak and may not grow the next season.

But mostly I meant that if you don't get the corm, the leaves will die and not transplant.
