If there is a need for shrubs or trees like bayberry, nannyberry, virginia creeper, dogwoods etc, the New Hampshire State Forest Nursery has great deals, usually 25 beautiful healthy bare root seedlings for 25 dollars. They are mostly sold out for this spring. I was very impressed I highly recommend winter sowing to make your own starts for next spring planting. If you make note of clumps of wildflowers worth propagating you can go back in early winter, get the seeds, and winter sow them for the cost of potting soil. You shouldnt get in trouble for harvesting seeds if you dont take all of them. I use mailing envelopes. This is better than sowing the seeds by tossing them about since most cannot grow past existing plants. It is better than clearing the ground which invites in invasives There is great information in gardenweb on winter sowing. It really works. Basically you plant the seeds into pots in mid or late winter and leave them out to freeze and thaw. It is recommended to plant milkweed in the cardboard tubes from papertowel rolls because milkweed don't like being dug up. The milkweed can be planted tube and all in the spring. I keep my pots in a dog cage to protect them from squirrels Bit by bit I have isolated some great natives. The first year they may not bloom. The second year you may have more seeds than you can handle. I am redoing my land too. Remove invasives. Transplant seedlings into new areas. As the invasives are reduced natives often reappear for free. It takes time and repetition. I rescue natives by pulling away competitors. Since many look alike in the spring before they bloom, I save anything interesting. If it turns out to be an invader I can pull it later just when it blooms You are doing a great service. The Serviceberry tree is a small one, with dangling white inflorescences in spring. It produces berries that look a bit like blueberries, but darker, and the birds love them. Elderberry bushes produce a berry that birds also love--but they reseed quite readily, depending on where you plant them. They can be rather gangly looking unless they get full sun.

i like your plant choices ! i am quite enamored of ceanothus ssp at the moment...i just collected some fresh seeds of our native ceanothus (which i have id as Ceanothus integerrimus) i also have been looking into drought tolerant plants, especially ground covers and /or landscaping elements...type plants/shrubs etc. i think you are on to a good start, those should all do well for you once established. they do say the same of ceanothus, as they do manazanitas - that they should have NO supplemental watering. basically the only way to kill them is to over baby them with watering, so i have read and researched... i have some large "yarden" areas, replacement for grasses, which get no watering and somehow keep on keeping on. also i like many feral / native / naturalized plants, and many of these are very drought tolerant, like things that grow in the forests and other areas without any human intervention. so anywho heres some thoughts, that i either have growing or have thought about/researched that should grow without watering. if these ideas are of no use to you, throw them out the window obviously =) but heres some food for thought. almond (despite recent weirdness i know its extremely drought tolerant) pistachio hazelnut (stays shrubby) olive fig elderberry grapes plums are pretty hardcore and tough all around. iffy to say they are completely drought tolerant, but they are close. they are just really tough and resilient all around. mahonia - oregon grape oregano pineapple weed/chamomile is surprisingly drought tolerant wild strawberry wild violets, viola, any kind of violet chicory self heal feverfew all salvias - sage calendula i've also found nigella of all types to be tolerant of dry conditions... well surely theres more, but enough for now...
