Small native tree no berries

I'm looking for a large shrub small tree to put in our landscape near our pool. Originally I wanted a Amelanchier canadensis but the berries may make a mess on the patio so that's not really my best choice. I have a cercis canadensis elsewhere & love it but find it grows very rapidly. If someone has a mature specimen (I'm in southern Ontario) can you tell me how large it gets relative to the serviceberry.

Any other suggestions. Also I'm putting a fringe tree in the plan as well although not as close to the patio. Should I be concerned?

Almost all trees have some sort of downside when placed near a pool! They all shed something (we have a pool too). Honestly, the berries on my Serviceberry never hit the ground. The birds adore them and they are quickly eaten - I swear some of them are eaten before they are fully ripe.

How about Rhododendron canadense? Will that take full sun in Ontario? How about Hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel)?

My fringetree doesn't fruit very heavily - if you get a male you won't have berries at all (not sure how you select a male, however, perhaps you just have to get lucky).

Thanks for the info about the fringetree. I will leave that in my plan as I really want one! Hamamelis virginiana may be a good option. I have one out back and its lovely. I have a serviceberry out back as well & don't see the berries on too long but it's in a bush so I couldn't be sure. Thanks for your experience.

Re rhodo unfortunately that won't work here. I have slightly alkaline soil, rhodo won't work here in full sun or without a lot of soil supplementation. Makes me said because I love them so.

You can also see the opposite branching arrangement in the first picture. Agree that it is some sort of native viburnum. Could also be Viburnum rufidulum, but V. prunifolium has more range in Ohio overall as does Viburnum lentago.

I like calicarpa just fine, but it can be a bit rank when it isn't showing off those berries in late summer. While it's great in a mixed shrub border, it wouldn't be my pick for a specimen plant. And birds eat hawthorne just as they eat ilex and aronia fruit. They may pick tastier things earlier on, but those persistent astringent fruit are entirely palatable after an extended freeze/thaw cycle, and an important late winter/early spring food source. I think of it as nature's way of making sure the birds save something for later.

Some sort of dogwood - Cornus drummondii, or Cornus racemosa, maybe. Cotinus obovatus is a native smoketree, but would get too big for your spot. Redbuds generally stay compact, and Cercis canadensis is definitely a local native. Bush honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera) is probably not big enough for what you have in mine. I am guessing that there has to be some sort of Holly or Viburnum that would do well in that type of situation as well.

If you would like nitrogen-fixeing shrub native to New York: buffaloberry (Shepherdia spp.); go with Shepherdia argentea, as the berries are better tasting. Btw, most of the plants krazyaroider recommends are: non-native (to NY); invasive; and one is not even a nitrogen-fixer: redbud (that's a tricky one, since it is in the bean/legume family). If you'd like a tree that is nitrogen-fixing, choose a variety of native alder (Alnus spp.) Btw, keep in mind: buffaloberry is native to the midwest - AND TO NEW YORK - look up the distribution range maps (google: [the plant] + usda).. (...or pollen library)
