ID, please - small tree / shrub with dark blue berries

I spent a lot of time trying to identify this before posting here. I have three photos of this small tree / shrub taken 11-06-10 in southern Ohio.

An identification would be greatly appreciated.

Check out Viburnum prunifolium (Black Haw). If that doesn't look right, also consider Nyssa sylvatica (Black Gum). Both have those red leaves in the fall, and are native to Ohio.

It's a viburnum, you can see a terminal bud in the last pictures. Looks like Blackhaw to me, too.

Hi, Thanks for the great id. I am in the Appalachians and I never see this kind of tree, ever. It was growing wild in the woods so I don't have a clue of how it started there. I have been actively keeping an eye for paw paw tree's but have yet to come by any. I would really like to find them here but im guessing its too cold for them. Thanks again for the id because hawthorns are not found here normally..

Thanks tashkentensis and saltcedar for the suggestions, but it's not either of those. I did a google search for the two trees you suggested. Bboy is right. The tree is evergreen, but it does shed old leaves almost continuously, which turn a bright red/yellowish before falling off. I will try and take a picture of one and post it to facilitate its identification. Thanks!

I like calicarpa just fine, but it can be a bit rank when it isn't showing off those berries in late summer. While it's great in a mixed shrub border, it wouldn't be my pick for a specimen plant. And birds eat hawthorne just as they eat ilex and aronia fruit. They may pick tastier things earlier on, but those persistent astringent fruit are entirely palatable after an extended freeze/thaw cycle, and an important late winter/early spring food source. I think of it as nature's way of making sure the birds save something for later.

Someone else suggested Hawthorn on the Name That Plant Forum, but it's such a large family of plants it was hard to search for it. But I think Saltcedar nailed it; "Xylosma congestum? Shiny Xylosma(Xylosma congestum): http://jeju.us/?p=529 saltcedar" Other sites said it is sold in nurseries as an evergreen hedge plant, has flowers that attract bees, and berry's for wildlife. I guess a seed was in some nursery pot soil. It came up near where I planted an oriental persimmon from Fanick's Nursery. My first thought was Viburnum lentago (Nannyberry Viburnum), but it could be prunifolium.

You can also see the opposite branching arrangement in the first picture. Agree that it is some sort of native viburnum.

Could also be Viburnum rufidulum, but V. prunifolium has more range in Ohio overall as does Viburnum lentago.

In addition sour gum does not fruit in flattish heads.
