Backyard thermometer just hit 100*F. Who else has super-hot hostas? What's the temp in your neck of the woods today?

That 100F seems to be far too much to survive for me. We had 86F or so and it felt very hot. How do hostas in afternoon sun survive at 100F in spite of watering? I watered yesterday and today, every plant got 1 hr overhead sprinkler.

I am only a little behind. We didn't have any hard frost until friday before last weekend. I pulled the frosted tomatoes on Sunday last weekend. I did do some trimming of perennial plants, sedum, asters, the Sweet Autumn Clematis on the trellis. The Clematis catches all the wind, so I cut the top off where it climbs up over the trellis, so the whole thing doesn't blow over. I just remove everything above 4ft., must have taken off 25 pounds of vine and leaves. I tried leaving the tops up last year, watched the sedum turn into mush after freezing. Asters fell over with snow on them. I was out trimming them all off in January cold!! I took off all the Lily stems too, also get mushy in cold. Peonies got cut early, I was right there so I cut foliage off while still green. My leaf shredder has done a pretty fair job, reduced all my leaves down to about 4 bags so far. Sure does make a huge pile of leaves into nothing. I still have the backyard to rake up, hoping for a couple bags of shreds from there. I also have some Oaks, they make the best shreds, don't get mushy, even wet. Most of their leaves fall in Spring, when new leaves push them off. Our other leaves also have been very slow to fall. The Japanese Maple is just starting, so is the sweet cherry. We also have had the hard wind, couldn't pile the leaves up! I will put some shreds on the garden during the next shredding session, but plan to save most for use on the big bed next spring. Total shred mulch over newspaper, over soaker hoses, for keeping the weeds down. Works pretty well. I managed to resist buying bulbs, there is no place to plant them unless I put them in the lawn. I still have some Petunias that won't give up, some plants in pots that have blooms. My newest Delphinium is blooming! I am shocked it has not frozen, but it continues to open up the stalk. Determined to set seed I guess. Quite pretty in dark purple. The roses are sending out new growth, some with buds coming. Even with seed hips, they keep coming along. Husband had the guys over to trim the Oaks. Removed a number of dead limbs, trimmed branches too big over the house. The trimming we did last year really made the tree perk up, lots of new growth. Hoping for the same with these. I am trying to think of it as healthy pruning, but most of the branches were pretty large, still had to come off. Did fill the wood pile back up, have a brush pile for a weenie roast! Have been watering the new trees and shrubs (on sale stuff) fairly often. We get misty rain, no real quantity. All the willows still have leaves, cottonwoods leaves are gone. Sweet gum still has leaves, as do the small Burr Oaks. I am taking this as a good sign, no wilting or dried up leaves like dead trees have. I think they like their new homes. New grass around them looks GREAT. Got the seed in at the right time, nice rain and sun. I am doing a little more trimming as I walk around. Fish pond is netted, looks nice. No fish feeding until spring. No visible frogs either, FINALLY seem to have dug themselves into the mud. Had one all last winter that would NOT hibernate, kept turning up every time I did something near the pond. I have actually been doing most of my outside stuff around the barn, cleaning up and putting away to make chores easier. New working lightbulbs in all fixtures! Darn short days.

I always cook my chicken/turkey bones a second time after removing the meat and storing it away. I keep the first broth in the fridge in quart-sized freezer containers, but I only fill each half way because I want to mix the second stock into the first before I pack it for the freezer. People are always surprised to see what nice broth you can get from just the bones, skin and gristle. Sometimes I will add water to the bones again after draining them, and stir this around. If the water starts looking like chicken stock, I'll cook the bones again. When I'm finished with the bones, they are soft and will collapse to a sort of a paste when you pinch them between your fingertips. I smush this stuff and bury it in my garden. I have to do it when the dog isn't watching though, and set something on top of it for a few days. I love my crockpot, too! I've never looked into what it costs to run it. I also have one of those big electric roasters that I always cook my Thanksgiving turkey in (and later use it to simmer the bones for broth) and Dawn, if you want something that cooks up a huge amount, you need that! But it would be hard to carry to a fire, now that I think about it. And I do save bits and tads of things. I don't like mixing my meats together so I will usually put them in wide-mouthed tapered pint canning jars and label them as to whether they are poultry, beef or pork. Sometimes I will make up a "tv dinner" if we have maybe one serving left of something, and put it in the freezer for later. I collect the liquids from canned vegetables and bits and pieces of veggies like tomatoes, celery, asparagus and outer cabbage leaves, in a plastic coffee jug in the freezer. When it's full I thaw it out, add add whatever I think it needs more of. Usually this is chicken or beef, some broth, and maybe a jar of canned tomatoes. A chopped onion. Add a can of mixed veggies from the store or a part of a bag of frozen. Actually I prefer the canned as it has potatoes in it. Heat all this up, add enough cornstarch to give it a nice smooth consistency. DH has a sensitive stomach so I don't spice it up. Just salt and pepper. If I'm feeding kids I add a little sugar, unless there's lots of liquid from canned corn in that batch. Yum.

Today's update: BEFORE they planned or ran the Electrical wire in the house, WE planned EVERY three-way switch, switched wall-plates, dimmers, where EVERYTHING would go, and most importantly: Which Circuits To Put On The Generator. With good GW counsel, we planned for a 20kv - a little more than we needed, but better have more than not enough, right? Especially with a small price diff between the 17 & the 20. DH gets out there, and finds they ordered, installed, connected, tested, certified & passed a 17kv. WHY?? Builder " oh. " AND, the items on the generator are TOTALLY RANDOM. If there is ANY overlap between what we planned, and what they did, it is complete coincidence. Front Door: They have fired the painters, and the cleaning crew (painter's wife & friends). Painter went on vacation (I had to look up the definition of what that actually IS, a "vacation") & left his somebody in charge.... and they left without coming to our lot for their work today. Someone on the cleaning crew was having a nervous breakdown, so they didn't show up. Check \- both Teams gone. We'd heard about the 'cleaning crew', and already left bilingual notes all over the house. TIP \- try www.freetranslation.com. They will convert ANYTHING you want into understandable destination language. Every 12 inches on every granite surface we put "Utilice Solo Agua" out of fear that they would screw up the sealer on the stone. Or stand on my Island. Or bleach the colorant out of the colored grout. Or any of the other things I'd already heard from other neighbors. Aside from all this, the Estimator has some great idea for some type of something that will alter the color on the door without having to order a new one. DAVE \- IF YOU ARE READING THIS \- LESS STUFF WILL BE SCREWED UP IF YOU WOULD JUST ORDER A NEW FRONT DOOR WITH SIDE\-LIGHTS. Measure the amount of Time that Whomever will be doing this, per hour, + cost, add deductions, and just figure it out. Be sure to matrix into that whatever you are docking the painter for these issues. SEE? That is called "ROI" calculations. Actually for the PMP, I think it is called something else, but you get the point. I haven't been to the house in almost a week \- I can't take it \- but I have been to the ABC store twice now. \*sigh\* And the packing is being done in an orderly fashion. Now it is 4:45, Gov't closed @ 4, and I haven't heard anything about the CO which needed to be obtained today, so the whomever has time for whatever so we can close in 48 hours. Anyone want to wager?

Hi suzieque and thank you for the compliment on my name.:) Grace is actually a family nickname and it's special to me and of course holds sweet memories. Lana is actually my "given" name. I did read your post before posting my reply to Glenda and agree with what you said so I certainly wouldn't challenge your opinion or position. I hope you don't think that I was discounting your words because that wasn't the case. In fact, although I'm not a frequent poster due to limited time from work & family responsibilities, I have "seen" and agreed with you on other matters when you posted at the KT. I'll qualify my opinion because I do have reasons that Glenda may or may not be aware of (since I've known her for years) but it may help you to understand my position. Like you, I don't believe in rushing out "willy nilly" (or the Chicken Little syndrome as I call it) and starting to point fingers without a great deal of thought or weighing consequences to actions. If you'd like for me to explain my reasons, I will, but I didn't want to hijack Glenda's thread by going into them. Or you could just trust me on mine and we could then agree that each of our opinion is as important as the other and doesn't require validation. Oh...I do want to add (since I suspect we're both sensitive to undue hardships that might compromise a business or perhaps a family enterprise), the health inspector will pull a full inspection required from the complaint and samples will be taken from the food products that were noted in the complaint. Further action won't be taken unless something is found. There won't be a reduction in the restaurant's health score and I doubt any customers will even be aware that the inspection was done. If something is found in the tesing then due diligence will be done to find the source. Glenda, we've never eaten at Mexicali although I've heard that they have very good food and I know I've heard you mention how much you like it. We normally eat at The Iquana Grill since it's much less traffic and closer for us. About the only time we purposely venture up Hwy 280 for food is my "have to" monthly treat at the Crazy Cajun for my Gulf shrimp "fix". You know how I obsess about my shrimp. LOL

83 here right now, a little warmer than I like for working outside but not to bad.

I will be camping right at the foot of the Grand Mesa next week. Hope it cools down by then.

I know, right? But we're actually a few degrees hotter than Grand Mesa NP today. Gets pretty roasting here sometimes.

Just a beautiful 82 here today, but the humidity's going up as the week progresses. I've got the air on because it gets hotter on the top floor, so I'm just cozy here inside. My Maine Coon cat is snoozing peacefully on the nice cool kitchen tiles, while the little cat, as usual, eschews the air conditioning and is stretched out dreaming her little kitty dreams in the hall. Go figure.

So lucky you are. Havent been to the Grand Mesa area in two years and having massive withdrawals. Used to go twice a year for mountain biking/snowboarding. It is such a beautiful place.

Got up to 87 today--plenty warm. I was out harvesting garlic today and it was just about too hot for that.

It is 91 degrees here right now. Today was not too bad but it is going to get worse. Tomorrow 98 and Wed 100. UGH! It is too hot for me! But I will take 100 degrees of dry heat rather than 90 degrees in the south anyday. A few years ago we went to Myrtle Beach SC and it was 90 and very humid. It felt much worse than it does here.

90's today in Missouri. One of the hottest days of the year, so far, but they say tomorrow will be worse.

Last week was really really nice, but now it's not.

And I planted two ornamental grasses and an astilbe today.

Getting hotter and more humid here, too. After a week with the ac off, I closed the windows and turned it back on tonight. Hate doing that, but DC summers can be miserable. Will return to watering in the morning. Poor babies are not going to be happy, especially those that lost most of their shade this year. Sigh. I am envious of those temps in the 70s!

We hit the dizzy height of 20.3 C (68.5 F) today! but the humidity is at 83% though and was quite a sweaty day trying to do anything vigorous in the garden so I sprayed my sisters lawn for creeping buttercups and rushes and other horrible interlopers.

I prefer dry heat otherwise I tend to drip and the salt is not good for the hostas lol.

It was a perfect temperature today after a week or so of 90 to 100 F in our neck of the woods. Fires all over BC but some under control now with a couple rains and a bit cooler temperatures. Today it was 76*F( 26 C) so great to be outdoors most of the day. I thought with the rains last night that I wouldn't need to water but that changes very quickly, especially under the larger hosta where it makes an umbrella area.

It's been hanging in the mid-80s for us all week, looks to continue for a bit. That's unseasonably cool for us, especially overcast. This is awesome summer weather! Such a relief from the last June and most of July, which was bouncing between mid-high 90s and hovering at 100. The hottest June I can remember in a while. Did some of that in May, too (80s, at least). I remember thinking, where the heck was Spring? I'm really glad to see it come down a bit now.

On the flipside, 4th of July weekend is usually steaming hot, but this year, we got a weekend of break and it was amazingly beautiful that weekend. Like perfect Spring weather. Seems to be all over the place this year. As for me, I'm fine with overcast for a while :)

We hit 90 here today and will be the same tomorrow. I gave up weeding and spreading extra topsoil after 30 minutes. Switched to watering the beds, and got the back half done! Glad I did too because our 80% of storms on Wednesday just disappeared. So tomorrow I will water the front yards.

Upper 80s today but mid 90s tomorrow with major humidity. Yuk. I was actually getting used to that awesome cool spell we had for a week.

Lucky You! We were supposed to get some rain yesterday but we got about 5 drops and then it blew over. So disappointing! I love it when it rains in the summer but it seldom happens here.

Hi Linda, lucky is right.

We've been pretty lucky this year as far as the afternoon thunderstorms go. Sometimes it's just high wind and lightning, no rain, without a significant temp drop, but this year it's been wetter in the afternoons, I'm happy to say. Certainly gives the plants, and us, a nice break in the heat when the showers hit. I hope your afternoons get wetter as the season goes on.

Only 77 here,and since we have been getting so much rain,it'not going to change until later in the week,and then only low 80's. It's funny, earlier in the year,people were telling me about how I will be sweltering later in the year,with temps in the 90's and high humidity! What I have to tell those folks is NYAHH,NYAHH!! Phil

Like my DH says, "with my head in the freezer and my feet in the oven, on average I'm pretty comfortable." He is learning how to live in 100% humidity and the midsummer afternoon showers, not always thunder storms.

I'm sitting inside today, while the fence guys are setting the 10 foot posts for my lattice screen. Sometimes your ideas look horrible when realized, but I do believe this one is going to be a winner. By Wednesday, I'll have pictures to show completed. I watered the area where the posts go in, and I think it helped soften the ground--except for the half rotten tree roots they encounter. They have a nice funny shaped tool, like some medieval weapon with a heavy curved head on it, they drop into the hole without much effort, and it works its way through the roots. I gotta get one of those...when I learn what it is named. I love good tools.

Oh. I'm doing fine today. It is only 84 right now, clouded over, so by mid afternoon probably some more rain. The fence guys are almost done setting the 48 feet of posts, will come back tomorrow to install the squared lattice panels and the T-bars across the top. THEN, I'll have some SHADE from afternoon sun. Or, the hosta will.

Then, I'll have a walled garden.

Sure, Mocc - some play, some don't...some laugh, some hurt...I guess it's all in our own interpretations. Enough said.

It is 30C outside right now and the air is thick and hot. Watered hostas well yesterday and planted a good dozen or so potted hostas. I think I'll stay indoors and enjoy the A/C! Keep cool, Everyone. :-)

I was judging by observing interaction of men in the offshore oil field. Pretty rough bunch actually. Nothing like a great friendly forum in polite society, where manners and respect count.

I really enjoyed cordoning off the bottom of the fence last week. One cute but growing bunny gone to bug the other neighbours, lol.
