suggestions please

I am a student(part-time, non-traditional)(this is a nice way of saying older :))working towards an associate of applied science in plant science and landscape technology. This semester I'm taking Plant Production. I am thrilled as it was cancelled the last time I signed up for it. The teacher is looking for a list of plants that we will grow. This is a very small class so there's plenty of room in the greenhouse. I'd like to come up with a short (10 or so)list of plants. My question to you all is what is your top 10? I don't know what our budget is. I'm attending a rather large urban community college.

Any and all imput will be greatly appreciated

Could you let us know a little more about what you are doing?
1. do you want mid-West natives only?
2. do you want annuals only ie wildflowers/grasses?
3. do you want trees/shrubs?
4. are you doing the propagation?
5. what is the duration of the project?
6. is this for environmental restoration/reforestation or what?

This is a college level plant propagation and greenhouse management class. We will be covering all aspects of propagation, seeds, tissue culture, cuttings, etc. The plants produced will be offered for sale at the end of the semester which is in May (close to Mother's Day) as a fundraiser for the department and clubs. Marketability will be important. I cannot tell you how excited I am about this class. Tomorrow we are cleaning and sanitizing the greenhouse and I'm even looking forward to that!

I use a three-tool kit consisting of: A cheap japanese hand hoe for shallow-rooted things like creeping charlie and chickweed A Nisaku hori-hori for deep-rooted things like dandelion and thistle A Rogue wide scuffle-hoe for large patches of nonsense* (see wintercreeper). I add one of those Fiskars three-tined dandelion pullers for lawn duty, but frankly, I think I have given up with that task.

"Assume not all outlets need to be smart." I have about 4-5 total throughout my house that were installed for very specific needs. That's enough for me to keep track of and manage. The vast majority of receptacles just need to supply power to something that's plugged in. Why go to the expense and complication of having a bunch of smart outlets if you can't specify a reason for having them? You can always add more later if some need arises.

Help! Door color Suggestions-Please

I ran across your other post asking for help with stain colors, and was going to encourage you to not go too dark on the stain, but I see you’ve already swung into action! I was also going to suggest getting a carpenter to cut the semicircle glass areas in the door in a more rectangular shape to update it. The reds on the doors do look good with the deep brown, but I’ve always liked grey-greens with browns. Something like in the photo below (the roof in the pic looks similar to your siding stain so you can see how it would look). You could paint your window, door and garage door trim in a black like in the picture to make them stand out a bit more (something like SW Iron Ore). Normally in an 80’s house like this, I’d recommend trim same color as siding, but a really dark stain tends to obliterate the windows, so a bit of delineation around them might help. If the grey-green is too bold, I’d go with a lighter tan. Or paint the garage doors same as the siding and choose some other fun color on the front door.

From a marketing standpoint, using Native plants - because this is the native plant forum, I think the following plants are desirable in the landscpape and might be good sellers.

I really think that Pattyrocks has the wrong forum. It sounds like a general course where they will be growing ornamental annuals and vegetable plants. She should post this query on the professionals forum. I assume she is looking to start petunias & geraniums.
116 days is not even enough time to produce native plugs for the commercial trade. Delicate, micropropagated liners from a TC lab will take at least 12 months. Most temperate trees/shrubs have seed sown around October, stratify over winter and germinate in April/May.

Except for some of the grasses and asters, you are starting too late for natives. Most natives need 90 to 120 days of cold stratification (moist, cold storage) before germination. Start now and you might be ready to move seed to warm in May, get germination in June and have plants to sell in September.
