Passiflora incarnata as stated above. I have had it in my yard for about 5 years now, great medicinal herb and beautiful flowers. Mine like compacted, dry clay soil. By compacted I mean it spread from a really nice composted bed to the full sun gravel driveway where it thrives. At my place it prefers no fertilizer or special attention, even watering is a no no for it. The vines will grow 25 to 30 feet in a season and flower continuously if they are kept picked. You can stake it but make sure it is either very tall or you will need to re-train it what seems like several times a week. If you are just after the fruit pinch the plant back so there are several terminal stems. Keep the flowers picked until around mid to late September then let them go. One it starts to fruit the flowers will stop, at least on mine. Watch the squirrels, they love them! They get sweeter after a frost or at least come cold nights. They will fruit earlier but mine have very little flavor, they seem to need that frost. You are looking for a yellow wrinkled look to them. Watch them though, they are wild spreaders through the roots!

i'm going to chime in on this, albeit very, very late, because i accidentally found it via search, and i have pertinent details to add. i may have just gotten lucky, but i have had an oleander on my 2nd story deck for almost 3 years now in a very large 12-15 gallon (or larger) square terra cotta pot. it's been there, 10' away from the house, left outside through the winter, through all half a dozen snows, sleets, hailstorms and ice storms this year and previous years as well, and it's doing great. i keep it pruned down to a smaller compact shape (no more than 4ft tall, 3' wide), it flowers like crazy year round, and it seems to do well. occasionally it gets grumpy, like during last year's drought, and some of the leaves yellow and fall off, but otherwise it's done exceptionally well. it gets a good bit of afternoon sun, from around noon till at least 5pm-6pm in the evening. i have seen others around, but not many. this one in particular is not something i planted (a former roommate left it behind), nor is it something i would have planted, but it is doing absolutely superb AFAIK. I'm pretty sure this guy is fairly root-bound in its current pot, but not sure my deck can really handle anything much larger in size to plant it in. i don't want to put it in the ground around the house due to its poisonous nature (small kids and animals galore nearby)

We called them Touch-me-nots because the ripe pods will burst when you gently squeeze them, shooting the seeds in all directions. The pod has ribs that tighten like springs as the pod matures. They're held together precariously by all the ribs contracting against each other, but when that balance is thrown off by a squeeze cracking one of the seams, the ribs snap into a roll, and the seeds go flying. There is a nice range of colors available: purple, like yours, red-orange, coral, pink, lavender and white. Some long-time growers have found white-spotted blooms and isolated them, so they now have seeds that fairly reliably produce spotted flowers. You can find those seeds occasionally on ebay. There is also a beautiful "camelia-flowered" version with double blooms. It's often easier to find seeds for those than for the old-fashioned, single-flowered ones. In any case, they are a true heirloom. I collect my seeds every year (though they have that special way to reseed themselves widely in the garden) and cherish them because I grew up with them in my mother's garden, and hers were from my grandmother (who was born in 1889), and I guess it's possible that hers came down to her through family. Also, I agree with the previous poster. The proper name is Impatiens balsamina, and they are annuals. HTH

Dang!! I'm so sorry I missed you! It would have been great to meet face-to-face. And yes, Richard was a little confused, but then again, it doesn't take much to confuse him sometimes lol!!! He's a bit scatter brained at times to say the least lol!! I'm glad you stopped by the booth tho - isn't it nice? I'm so happy they won the blue ribbon because they put so much work into the show. And how did you like the show itself? I thought it was very nice. Since I was laid off last year, I was trying to be good and not spend too much so I didn't exactly eat my way thru the market, which is my goal every year, but I had more than a few good meals there. We also ate at a couple Vietnamese places down the street from the hotel (we stayed right across the street from the convention center) so I was happy. I made the wonderful Amish bacon I bought for supper last night, and tonight I'm having home made chicken soup using the egg noodles I bought. I REALLY envy you being a local who can enjoy that market year round!!! I'm beyond jealous lol!! Next year's theme is Hawaii and I love tropicals, so it should be neat! Hopefully I'll be back to work before then and I'll have some money to spend too lol!! Lisa
