Total loss/Fall swap Question

My garden was totally ruined last night in the hail storm. My hostas, brugs, coral bells, daylilies, and everything else was totally shredded by the hail. The KMOGGs cut in half, it looks like fall in my yard except all the leaves on the ground are green instead of yellow or red.

I'm not looking for sympathy (well maybe a little) but want to find out if I should let someone else host the swap or if you'd still like to have it at my house. Please post your opinion.

Whoever was next in line for the swap next spring and fall please send me an email.

How sad!

Mine was pretty clocked when we had our golfball sized hail in June. Some has recovered, but some corners just aren't worth checking out anymore.

Well, you've got my sympathy, whether you were looking for it or not! That's just awful. Thank heaven perennials come back after something like that. I'm fine with going either way on the swap. Either have it at your place and you can describe what your garden looks like in better days, or trade with someone and have the one at your house when everything has recovered next year.

Watch the birds for a bit--are they pecking each other and yanking feathers? Are they picking themselves? Do you find feathers on the ground, or none? If a bird does yank a feather, does it then eat it or spit it out? How is their skin--dry and itchy? Eating feathers can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency, usually protein. Overcrowding and boredom can lead to pecking and picking in general. Since you say the feathers are dull (dry skin can go along with this), you might try adding some oils to their diet--pet stores sell some feed supplement oils for birds that you can mix into their daily feed ration, or set some vitamin E capsules and mix a few capsules contents into the daily ration. Don't mix it into the feed barrel itself, you don't want it to spoil and go rancid. Try changing up their diet a bit-- offer some table scraps once in a while, live mealworms, fresh greens--chickens are omnivores, like you and I, and like you and I, don't thrive on just one type of food. I am deeply ashamed of the vast quantity of daylilies I snagged...I had to keep telling my husband, "But you should have seen how many I left behind!" I am also deeply sore from planting everything up!! If the temps dip do I need to cover stuff? How cold before I need to? I never plant in the fall so I'm kinda freaking out... :) Thank you all for your generosity - Barb and Trish and Dee and Karen especially. And Charlene, hostess with the mostest. Spring swap will bring some divisions from my back border (is anybody else cutting stuff back yet?), so stay tuned! There's some yummy stuff back there. Hi Bostonpam. OK, I seldom see a house that induces a bit of envy, but yiour house is one that does, even only seeing these small detail, because I know the rest of the place is jutast as handsome--or will be, once gain, thanks to you & your husband. It takes vision & determination & tste & money--lots & lots of money--to make an old house workable for modern life, which is why so many people buy them for their lots, tear them down & throw up new construction that won't last half as long as what they destroy, and that are ugly besides. Our cities need more people like the two of you. The good news is that you're on the right track. If privacy isn't an issue in the first room, then half-length curtains, hung right in front of the glass, from the top of the bottom sash to the sill, and made of plain white handkerchief linen will be plenty, and be period-appropriate besides. Sew little rings on the top edge (keep the hems narrow) and through the rings, run small hooks that slide easily on a narrow steel rod set next to the sash. Let the rod's steel oxidize naturally and when the newness is gone and it's darkened to your taste, give it a coat of paste wax. That's all you need to do. Alternatively, you could use 2-inch wooden blinds painted white, with wide, henna-colored woven tapes, which is also a thoroughly historic tratment. Hang those as close to the glass as you can, too. In the TV room, plain dark velvet hung from big wooden or metal rings on a hefty wooden pole would be correct and provide the sound amelioration & room darkening you need. And while continued drapery was popular at the time our house was built, I'd limit the curtains to the actual window areas. Yes, curtains hung outside will cover the rim in htihs area, but if you hang them so they stack on the wall, the wiwnoow embrasure will still show, and it will preserve the windows' verticality, even when the curtains are closed. If you're having the curtains made, use double fullness, but have the extra width pleated invisibly on the back side--not visible from the front, as in modern curtains--so that when pulled over the windows, they fall in a nice, smooth panel, not a bunch of busy folds. At the windows themselves, you could copy the treatment in the front room for consistency and, especially with the Venetian blinds, light control. For that, Venetian blinds are the best device ever invented. Or you could do as you suggested and use a simple fabric roller blind. Stop in anytime with your questions. I feel sorry for you and your garden Dave how terrible. My yard can accomodate the garden web people about 20 to 30 who usually come to the swap. If you would prefer to have yours another time when your garden is healthy I would glad to have people come out to my garden in Woodbury. I don't have quite the selection of plants and space that you have but I do have a pool if people want to bring a suit for a dip after the swap thats okay with me. Its up to you Dave it doesn't matter to me!! Just let me know. TammyMN

Oh, Dave, you have my sympathy, too! What is with all the hail storms this year? Yikes!

You decide if you want to have the swap or not. I will go wherever I need to.

It is up to you how you feel about it. IF it was me I would probably want to wait so people could see what my garden is really like.

If this was June I wouldn't even worry about it. There was a hail storm that hit earlier this summer but it was nothing like this one.

I'm hoping everything recovers. I know most of it will bounce back next spring but there are a few things I'm a little worried about like the brugs, dahlias, and a few others I just planted this spring.

It's kind of a bummer cause I just had the expansion tilled up the week before and had spread the compost. I was looking forward to hosting the swap in Sept to show it off. Oh well.

Thanks for the offer Tammy. I may take you up on it. I don't have internet service cause the hail knocked out my satellite dish too so I'll post my decision on Mon.

Im so sorry to hear about you damages, Dave. When we had our baseball hail in June, It made a mess out of my hostas, etc, and unfortunately, they still look tough, but will be beautiful again next spring. Make sure you really take a look at EVERYTHING around your house, including any landscape lights, gutters, lawn furniture skylights and anything else outside that you might not normally think of. I had dents in my lights and holes thru mu lawn furniture and gutters and the adjuster caught more than I did, thankfully. I sure hope Minnesota is done with the hail now...good luck on your clean up - I understand your frustrations, although I am sure your gardens would put mine to shame!

I've have bad hail damage before so I know how you feel. I too will go anywhere for the swap. Since I've only been to one of the swaps before, I'm just glad that date works for me.

I don't have as big as gardens as Dave but I think you will like to see how much I can cramm in a over sized yard. I have about 200 daylilies, 100 lilies, 85 hostas, and 60 containers this year. Most of my plants are all labeled. I have a small pond with water plants and first year gold fish. I do have big beautiful brugmansia blooming right now. Dave will help with getting all the emails since my computer skills lack!! I hope you can all make it.
