I've been 'seduced'

I received my Seducer and Spartacus from Plants Delights Nursery today and was shocked to see the size of Seducer (it has 5 divisions) compared to Spartacus. I'm pleased with both hostas - just a little surprised at the size of Seducer. I'm anxious to see what they do next year. Of course I know Seducer is not going to look like a tree!

You got it! Congratulation, the big one is a beauty! I have a h.'Seducer' I bought last year locally, and it is smaller. When you start with a large plant, the wait to maturity and full satisfaction is so much shorter. I got big ones from Land ot Giants and Glenbrook Farm, and they look really good too. Bernd

Oh, wow! That is a huge plant! Congratulations, DD. When it comes up next spring, it'll practically be full grown. Lol. I have that one coming to me this fall from Hallson's. I can't wait!

OK, my experience is secondhand from a dear friend who lives close by and redid her kitchen three years ago with a 4-oven traditional gas Aga. She and I were talking Agas last week, in anticipation of my own one-day-soon kitchen remodel, and she said it's one kitchen decision she would not make again. She listed the pros and they were strong: she loves the preheated ovens (hated preheating her old wall ovens), she loves the number of ovens and overall cooking space, it's great for all the roasting/braising she does and bulk-cooking to freeze later, the look is perfect for her French country kitchen decorating style, it's a workhorse when she entertains. Her main regret is baking. With the preset oven temps, putting in a pan of cookies isn't as simple as closing the oven door and letting it bake for 25 minutes. Instead, she spends a lot of time fussing and checking and moving the baking pan from oven to oven so the cookies bake evenly. Last fall, she said she was going to start baking seriously on the Aga so she could conquer the learning curve and feel comfortable. It's been close to a year and she really (still) dislikes it. Price-wise, she was committed to a 48" higher-end pro-style range (Viking, Wolf, Thermador et al.), so she didn't pay significantly more for the Aga. It's not even the unpredictability of baking on the Aga; more, it's the extra attention required from her for simple baking that is annoying.

Plectranthus 'Velvet Elvis'

I bring in about 5 types of Plectranthus for winter, as potted plants. Mona usually goes semi-dormant, losing foliage. Looks great again now after being back outside for a while, blooming the past 2 months, not expected to stop until brought inside. Yours will probably fare a lot less dramatically in a GH than mine in my laundry room. Although I keep Coleus in water on windowsill for winter, have been for years, never tried any other Plectranthus that way. Glad to read Katob's testimonial. That windowsill space might as well be used for something, I'll make sure no Plectranthus stems are neglected in my save attempts this fall!

My thought would be to print a picture of your house on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Overlay a piece of tracing paper. Following the outline of your house and windows draw the basic shape. Then shade in, also with pencil, the stone areas. Then draw in your two outside columns. Now try several variations by drawing in perhaps arched header across and a middle arch. Or perhaps two centered columns. When you beef up your columns the ones to the far left and right need to be the same. If you choose two columns flanking the white wall they could be smaller. Make sure your structure is not compromised. This tip was given to me by my daughter who is in the building business. Also, I think a front porch railing would date your house. Then decorate the blank wall with furniture, plants, and walk decor. If you paint the house, I’d choose a color taken from the stonework as opposed to the stark white.

Thank you all, I really love that rug! NJmom, after our family Valentine dinner (a week late) I jist switched up the pink and red for greens and white. I have a St. Patrick’s Day ladies’ lunch here on the 15th and, life being as unpredictible as it is, decided to go ahead and set at least one table. Depending on the RSVPs we may end up with one or even two card tables in the foyer.

Those are really nice plants. I love every picture of Spartacus and when it grows up it will be a big wow too. Seducer is a big wow.

No wonder you're seduced! I passed on Seducer a couple years ago. It was a small plant with a narrow brim. Looks like it changes from an ugly duckling to a swan.

Ken - Actually one of the leaves has a siamese twin - something I've never seen before? So I thought I would send the plant to you to perform surgery.....NAH! NAH! NOT! NOT! NOT!

Very nice plants. The reason you got such a mature Seducer is that it is patented. The nurseries can't cut them for resale...legally. So their loss is your gain. Enjoy!

My Seducer was little when I got it a few years back. First year, maybe second year TC that I bought off of eBay from the diggin dutchman (hostabargains). It's doing really well, even in full sun. Love it.

ken, send me a piece when you get it. Then we can see if it grows well in three states.

I have a special intensive care bed on which I Installed "the clapper"

I teach the hosta to clap when they need water.

Unlike corn, however, they do not have ears, and don't follow instructions well.

Should also be tested in a bit more of an arid environment. In the West, perhaps. In high elevation. There must be a region like that. No, no, not Utah. Not THAT far West.

I can attest to it growing well in Ontario. My third growing season with it. When I got Seducer it was only 3 leaves. I was shopping at a hosta nursery and seen it in his show garden and pointed it out and exclaimed "what is that one?" Most money I ever spent on a hosta but it "seduced" me immediately.

Zowie! Looks like a real stunner. I'm looking forward to next year. I'm also going to plant it in a sunny spot in front of my garden. And Dave, I'll have to install one of those "clappers." Don't want this beauty to become dehydrated.

Reminds me of a giant-sized 'Deja Blu' that actually has the white lines nice and pronounced. Hallson Gardens has this? I hope it's not sold out yet...
