Need some advice!
Comments (4)before going out and paying for it at a big box store, I would consider checking out your local craigslist.org site for your area. Look under the farm & garden section and you'll probably see a couple postings for people selling off their manure for $10 a scoop (which is about as much as you could fit in the bed of a pickup). If you don't see anything there, post a "WANTED" in that same section asking for any farmers that would be willing to give it away freely. You have to remember, horse stables often have to *PAY* to have manure removed. Giving it away helps them save money too... --- Filed under: Yet another reason why I wish I owned a pickup. :sigh:...See MoreHigh pH in lasagna bed - advice?
Comments (6)Gary, I think you hit the nail on the head - I decided to test my meter (a garden store purchase) in vinegar and it read 7.0! So I think your guess about the results being skewed must be on track. So I will run another test with the pH testing tablets to see what they give me. Mackel, I did use lots of straw and alalfa meal/pellets in the beds when layering to build up the height of the beds, as well as the coir, leaves and castings, so while it was a lot of manure, it was balanced out by plenty of organic matter too. My hope was to avoid the "too much manure" problem I've heard about. I do use straw mulch every year as well and then pile on over top in fall so it gets incorporated. Thanks for the suggestions though, reassures me I'm on the right track. Thanks for the helpful comments, everyone! Just wanted to run my situation by some knowledgeable soil people before panicking and it seems there's no reason to panic. I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to my garden, I have to admit. Comments (3)I live in east Texas and raise miniature horses......if you get down this far, you are welcome to all you can haul. I would go to the website of the American Miniature Horse Association and look thru their list of members that are close to you. Contact them, and I feel quite sure they will be delighted to have you haul it away. If you find someone close, if you like, email me, I probably know them, and can contact them for you. Or......go to your local feed stores and put up a "manure wanted - will haul" sign. Bet you get lots of calls! There are a bunch of horse people in the N. Tx. area. Also put your number on bulletin boards at local vets, horse arenas. You will set yourself up for life with all the manure you want! Good luck! Judith...See MoreSource of horse manure?
Comments (1)See if there are any nearby riding stables or horse race tracks. Also, if there are feed stores, they might be able to tell you about any stables. You can also check Craigslist. You'll probably have to haul it yourself, in a truck bed or some kinds of containers like 32-gallon trash cans. You may also be able to find composted manure at landscape companies, they deal in large quantities and will deliver....See Morepatapscomike
