Up until about 5 years ago, I've always had a back yard "white garden". I came across Tabernaemontanas when I moved down here. They are the "want-a-be" jasmines. Crepe jasime, pinwheel jasmine, regulars and the drawf, and the double dwarfs (thanks David McLean). Then add in the white brugmansia(angel trumpets),Cypress Gardens, shredded white and the last one I planted was Super Nova - super big!! Throw in a couple of LaFrance white hibiscus. In the summer I'd plant white pentas, periwinkle Winter - the white inpatiens, petunias And for vines - white mandivillias, thunbergias. Then you start planting anything that has white in it. Varigated spider plants, transcantia, and liriope for edgeing. And than don't forget the hardscape. I Still have all 1200 (12"x12") white stepping stones. A white 7' wide x 16' long x 8' tall trellis that still has my ever-blooming poet's jasmine on it. And the back yard is still outline in white rope lights to light up the back yard when we need it. Why did I do it? I would come home at night and the back yard would be pitch black. Only a few "white" flowers showing. It became my quest for 35 years. I still have a lot of white throughout the garden, but the marroon jacaranda tree, bouganvillea tree, Hong Kong Orchid tree, potato tree followed me home. You know the rest..........Cheryl

If you can find it, the old species hosta "planteginea" has wonderful white flowers and an amazing fragrance. It's one of those sometimes hard to find plants as everyone used to have them, so stores don't carry them anymore. Aphrodite is a sport of it. I also love my white stargazer lily (fragrant), white "Annabelle" Hydrangea, white "David" phlox (frag.) Minnie Pearl Phlox, White clematis - esp. "Sweet Autumn", "white Nancy" Lamium, white creeping phlox, white daisies, white spiderwort, "Husker Red" penstemon has white flowers, some coral bells have white flowers, white annual dianthus, white daylilies, lily of the valley, white swamp milkweeds( asclepias incarnata), white anemones, and white crocus, tulips, daffodils and bleeding hearts to start off the show in the spring. I'm in NE Iowa and these all do very well for me.

When you specify "tall, flowering" how tall are you aiming at? Toad lily/Tricyrtis hirta grows to 3 ft. tall and blooms here in southern New England (z6a) end of September/ beginning of October every year, is zero maintenance, doesn't spread, not bothered by predators and helps sustain pollinators.
