japanese maples

I have never been so confused as to picking out a tree. Is there anyway to narrow down the choices? I would just like a small yellowish green weeping japanese maple.

Is there any one site with good pictures and growth habits that anyone can recommend?

Well, you've narrowed down the choices very nicely with your requirements - there are not all that many small, greenish, weeping laceleafs, at least compared to the red leafed forms :-)) Look for something like 'Viridis' or 'Waterfall'. Or if you have the space for something a tad larger, Acer japonicum 'Green Cascade' is a stunning plant with superb fall color.

Mountain Maples has an excellent JM website with lots of good photos. They are located in California (are you a CA zone 9?) and also have great suggestions for maples best suited for your warmer climes.

Thank you for aiming me in a direction. Mt. Maples has a very nice web site. Seems like all of the ones that I really like are sold out at this time. But I can make a great list of possibles to search for in the future. I mistyped my region. I am in the midwest #5, very close to St. Louis MO.

All right, thanks a lot for the info. I did have it wrapped loosely for a few months about four years ago when a rabbit had damaged it. But the discoloration only showed up recently. Weird. I'll clean off the ooze and keep an eye on it. Right now it looks great so fingers crossed. I don't know about the graft -- I purchased the tree off eBay from a nursery in NC for about $15 when it was a baby. I know it's not the best source, but I don't have a lot to spend on trees so I tend to get them small and cheap, and this one has done extremely well. Thanks again for your help.

Just so happens I have a Bloodgood Japanese maple under a canopy of a Sugar Maple and a Red Maple. However, I can probably get away with this as my precip tends to be heavy 50-60 inches annually. In your drier climate, I think there would be excessive competition for moisture--Japanese Maples do NOT like drought. Good luck with your Japanese Maple. PS., Despite having lots of exotic plants, that tree always gets all the attention!

Japanese Red Maple or Red Select Japanese Maple?

Hmmm...where to start. First of all, there are nearly a thousand different cultivars of Japanese maples. About a third (or maybe more) of them have red leaves at least a portion of the year. Secondly, japanese red maple would be a misleading name since a red maple is a native maple to the US that has green leaves and red flowers. Red japanese maple would make more sense. So, "Japanese red maple" could refer to one of hundreds of cultivars that have been reproduced by grafting, or it could be a red seedling that shows good red characteristics. This would mean that 'red select' is a specific cultivar of a red japanese maple. You must also consider whether or not it is a weeping red dissectum (fine lacy leaves) or an upright palmatum (star shaped leaves). 'Red select' is one of many red dissectum cultivars (lacy and weeping). I think 'red select' is a seedling from 'inaba shidare' (guys I know Vertrees claims that they are one in the same, but I have convincing information that says otherwise). They are similar, but some claim there are distinct differences (and by distinct I mean practically with a magnifying glass). Other similar common cultivars include 'crimson queen', 'tamukeyama', 'garnet', and the newer 'red dragon'. A couple of good red upright cultivars include 'bloodgood' and 'fireglow'. Search these names and this should shed some light on what the differences are.

Looking for seeds for Japanese maples or laceleaf weeping maples

If I may I'd like to remind that japanese maple seeds are like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get. So just because the seeds come from a red variety or a laceleaf variety does not mean that the seedlings will be the same or even similar to that of the parent. There is a higher chance that they will be similar compared to seeds of a normal green japananese maple, but no guarantee.

There are many good etailers...feel free to email me personally at myersphcf@aol.com if you want some other scources and advise for our area ...If you are very near St. Louis you are more likely in zine 6b not 5 as I am 100 north and am in 6a ( with the new zone info out ...) Most JM's will do well in your area unless you have another spring like the last one...The St. Louis area was hit much harder than I was and Chicago NOT at all. The Mo. Botanical gardens has many differnt species of JM's although I have no idea whether all or any made it through last spring ...I would guess yes but they will likely be sparce this year ... be prepared to find 90% are NOT marked with any info on what cultivar they are so it is a visual treat not a place to say "hey I like and want that one for my yard;>) david

We are only about 35 miles NE of St. Louis. We lost a beautiful JM to the frost (as luck would have it we were in Hawaii at the time) I loved that tree. I got it on clearance at Walmart about 12 years ago. It was a pitiful little thing that I buried in the ground with a tablespoon (no shovel small enough) It grew into a beauty about 7 ft tall and I am lost without it on my patio! hope next spring is kinder. Those zone maps are tricky to read. 6b? I will remember, thank you.
