Mid-Atlantic Gardening

Longwood or Winterthur?

I will be traveling from NJ to Washington, D.C. next week. I'll have enough extra time to tour either Longwood or Winterthur but not both.

Any thoughts on which one I should see?

Also, any outstanding nurseries in the Princeton, NJ area?

Longwood would be my choice, if you haven't been you are in for a treat. Give yourself plenty of time, it's big.

If go over the Commador Barry Bridge and take Rt 322 to the left onto US 1 you will pass Styers Nursery on the left side of US 1 a couple of miles down. It is a very fine nursery.

Definitely Longwood. I'm guessing that if you got 100 responses, at least 90 would vote Longwood.

It's true Jean - your husband's reality. As a business you can make money but for 10 hens at home each dozen eggs would be about $300 a pop until you paid off the coop at $899 and the freight to a home at $365, not to mention buying the chickens. Started 17 week old laying poulets are about $12 each but the shipping on them is $49 (they do come with their shots however). Then there is the feed and having to work it each day to keep everything extremely clean and fresh. You have to keep chickens away from wild birds and their droppings, not to mention the predators, but oh the romance of having a barnyard and a self sustaining life (without the hard work of course because you are rich enough to hire a few people to actually run the place). He he he... My co-worker had chickens and their chickens lived outside during the day and sometimes at night, but had a shed they could go into if they wanted. They lost some to predators and sometimes the eggs were just laying around on the ground and other times the hens would lay in thick shrubby growth at the edge of their woodlot (in the brambles). Betcha egg gathering was the pits there! She said they shot a opposum one time that was raiding a favorite hen's nest - the hen woke them up screaming her bloody head off and running to beat the band (they are fast she said) and with the flashlight they saw the possum on the nest eating the eggs. Boom - bye bye possie. Awww...... poor possie - he only wanted some fresh eggs too!

I can only agree with what y'all are saying. I absolutely love the Farmers Market and buy most of my plants from there - at least the ones I don't start from seed and Tony's place - well - that is just another horticultural treat. My very first introduction to PDN was a private tour as a Master gardener. There were 7 of us on the tour and Tony took us over every inch of the place. I was in HEAVEN. I have been back many times since and never come away empty handed..... Lynne

Hi Kousa! The thought of organizing a peony chapter terrifies me!!! I'm much more a follower rather than a leader. And I can barely tell a herbaceous from a tree peony! I've certainly learned a lot since I found this forum so maybe in a few years I might work up the courage! I AM going to visit the University of Michigan's peony garden this spring, though. We planned a girl's trip to a small lake in MI (my mother-in-law lives a couple of hours away from it) before I even realized UofM had peonies! I'll be dragging my mother, mother-in-law, 2 sisters, 2 nieces and my daughter along! I've already started one of my sisters on peonies, sent several divisions to her in OK last fall. Hopefully she'll be bitten by the peony bug, too!! I'm also going to the American Peony Society Convention this spring. Another of those fortuitous discoveries, it's happening just a couple of hours from where we'll be vacationing on the weekend we were supposed to fly back. Since I hadn't made flight arrangements at the time it was an easy decision to stay a few more days to attend. I plan to keep my mouth shut, ears open and camera clicking away the whole time! If anyone has specific questions about any variety mention it--I'll keep an eye out and get pics and descriptions.

I'm just across the Delaware River from Philly. I've stayed at the Four Seasons several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you do visit there's a very unusual museum - the Mutter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCtter_Museum Here's a paragraph from Wikipedia to show some of the odder items. A large part of Winterthur's appeal is the world famous museum of period furniture and home furnishings. Each floor is a seperate guided tour. If you are not interested in furniture, fabrics, silver etc I would recommend Longwood. It is alot to see in one day. There are several good retail nurseries in the greater DC area.

Thanks, that is what I expected but I had to ask. The garden pictures on Winterthur's website look wonderful but I sort of remembered it was more museum than garden.

Styer's Nursery will be on the itinerary also. thanks again.

Longwood is great, however I have been introduced to Chanticleer in Wayne, PA. It is near the area you'll be in. Chanticleer is small but has so much whimsy in the hardscape you'll spent lots of time looking for the treats amongst all the plantings. I will be going back often.

Longwood would probably be the best choice, although I would 2nd the Chanticleer recommendation. Had the opportunity to go there last year myself as a PHS member for one of the scheduled member's events and was amazed. The website for Chanticleer is here.

You'll love Styers! One of my favorite nurseries!

Longwood's website usually lists what's in bloom for each month.

Longwood, for sure. If you have lunch in the dining room, the mushroom soup is delicious.

My wife and I went to longwood for our wedding aniversery a few years back, as well as to winterthur (on the same trip, they are pretty close when you get right down to it)and after visiting longwood first and winterthur second, nothing compares with longwood.(but winterthur is nice too, in a blue haired granny sort of way)
And since then, my wife and I have been trying to find a garden that was as impressive as longwood and we both think that there isn't one to be found on the east coast, we did visit a garden on an island near seattle two years ago and that one was just as great as longwood, albeit the name escapes me, it too was well worth the trip.
(although here in MD garden grandma's garden is like a lil mini longwood)

I think Chanticleer is the ultimate garden experience.

Those are great Chanticleer pics! When I was there May of 2004, I just had to grab a pic of some of their peonies in bloom at the time.

For sheer floral profusion what is the best time of the year to visit Longwood? They are in PA so I'm assuming their spring arrives a little later than it does in Montgomery County.

Longwood is located in a solid Zone 7 Delaware County PA so no, not necessarily later than Montgomery County, MD (which I'm off to for a biz trip next week BTW). ;-)

I don't know, Professor Dirt, after looking at Chanticleer's website, I think that could become our new favorite.

Not to disappoint you, but there is no resturant at Chanticleer. However, there are many wonderful places to eat in the town of Wayne. John Harvard House is one of them.

There is Bonnie's on Conestoga Rd. It's open for lunch and has wonderful food and is only a few minutes away from Chanticleer. They also do catering, I believe.
