All the advise given is to plant hostas where they will receive morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled shade.

Well, I don't have any place that only receives morning sun.

I'm planning on planting some where they will receive morning shade (or very dappled shade) and 2 hours of late afternoon sun (or dappled shade again).

Any thoughts?

Just plant them and see how they do. You can move them later if you are not satisfied.

Either try one of the Sun "Tolerant" varieties, or the more sun they get, the more you have to water them. Bright "full" shade is fine too as far as I can tell. The AM sun thing is about the "ideal" conditions for most hostas.

I'm with Dave. Plant them and see how they do.

Lilacs prefer full sun, so do butterfly bushes. Hydrangeas are the classic afternoon shade flowering shrub but there are others: Fothergilla, viburnums, rhodies and azaleas, witch hazel, Clethra, Itea. For something with unique foliage and the ability to be a major focal point, I'd consider oakleaf hydrangea, Hydrangea quercifolia. It has big, bold foliage that looks like giant oakleaves and that turns wonderful colors in fall. And it produces showy, large, white cone-shaped flowers and can become a large, spreading plant. Plus it has more interesting bark than any other type of hydrangea - kind of a cinnamon color and it peels off in strips (exfoliates). Here is a link that might be useful: oakleaf hydrangea

How about Chelone 'Hot Lips' ? It provides a nice shot of hot pink color in the 2-3 ft range, full sun, in FALL ! Looks very nice paired with the Aconitum (monkshood) mentioned above, as both are fall bloomers. I will also strongly recommend lilies. I have just added about 20 lilies of different types to my pastel beds this year, so i am eagerly awaiting that show for the first time ! Plus, you don't have to dig and lift each year, they are quite hardy and will multiply, and the forms, scents, colors and variety of heights means there is one or more that can fill any "holes" you have in the June/July garden.

I wouldn't expect too much issue, although ideally it would be better to get them slowly acclimated to conditions they will meet when they are planted in the ground. Giving 5-6 hours of full sun (and wind) should toughen them up a good bit. For my garden, gradual exposure to wind is my biggest challenge since we get regularly windy days and un-hardened plants will get wind-burned and torn apart (literally). In the past I seem to recall transplanting some plants hardened with about 4-5 hours of sun into a bed where they got 9 or so and I don't recall seeing any issues.

I have found that a hosta grown in heavier shade has fewer but larger leaves, a smaller root system and grows much slower. The advantages are less water consumption, Leaves last later in the season from less direct sun and better color distinction from less fade. I have several hundred in deep shade and have found that good compost and fertilizer are needed or they begin to shrink from lack of sun. Planting in a pot can also help one control the nutrients and water that the plant gets. Growing in deep shade can be done. just with different results..

Hostas in lots of sun will need more water and grow faster....they may burn a little but they will do better than those without enough sun.

ester talks of keeping hosta cool.. their heat intolerance...

the whole issue with morning sun versus afternoon sun.. is the heat..

hot hosta tissue in pm sun.. needs more water... so water them more ..

as noted.. hosta are only shade TOLERANT .... they grow faster .. multiply faster and get bigger in full sun.. given the needed water.. that is how they are field grown .. the only problem is that they can look real ugly by august...

you are better off growing them in full sun to get a big clump to move to more shade... rather than taking the same small plant.. and planting it in deep shade and hoping it gets big ...

most hosta.. given the requisite water.. will do just fine in 2 to 4 hours of sun.. and those that dont.. you can trade out to a shadier part of the garden.. down the line..

frankly me think you protest too much about 2 hours of sun ... find something else to worry about ...

heck.. throw them on the driveway.. they will be fine...

Here is a photo of my bog that get a lot I mean a lot of sun, it is the water. You can create this on a plant by plant basis with this method.

Plant a pot with no holes at the bottom of the hole about 12-18 inches below the plant then water as needed.
Every time you water there will be some retained in this constant water reservoir.

BTW I thought I gave them enough room but they grow like weeds. Note yard stick for size!

I have a treed area(with matured Lindens)that would be ideal, but the soil is very dry and would need to be constantly watered in order to support hosta plants. Ester, could you elaborate on your system. Thanks.
