Black Thumb desperately seeking help for innocent Japanese Maple

Dear Gardeners,

My apologies if I have missed the answer to this question on another post. I have searched, and can't find quite what I am looking for.

I recently acquired a young, green japanese maple. It is still in a container, and currently outdoors in a place where it gets ambient sunlight, not very much direct. I have only had this maple about two months.

It looks kind of sickly! As we are approaching winter, I fear that I will kill this maple, which would just break my heart. It is rather important to me and I want to cre for it properly.

Does it need to go into the ground? Does is need to come inside? For what it's worth, I would rather not put it in the ground if I can avoid it because I will probably be moving (within the area) soon.

Thank you for your aid!

Best,

Erin
