Can an Amur Maple survive as a container plant?

I have a few Amur maple seedlings I've rescued from outside our apartment complex that I've potted up on our patio in 3 and 5 gallon pots, along with a few perennial flower seedlings in between. They are approximately 8" tall with good root systems, and are doing well in an eastern exposure. I was hoping to do something similar to bonsai, but on a larger scale, with the Amur maples ultimately maintained at ~3 ft through judicious pruning. I'm most concerned about the hardiness of the trees in pots overwinter. I plan on moving the pots up against the apartment wall, out of the wind, and collecting bags of leaves from my mom's home to pile around for insulation. Our patio faces inwards to a courtyard encircled by other apartment buildings, providing a microclimate of sorts that should also offer protection.

Does this sound feasible to anyone else? If Amur maples can't survive despite their hardiness, what else could? Thanks.
